For Purdue University.

Do your internship in a veterinary clinic in Negombo Beach, a fishing resort popular with Sri Lankans. The focus in the Clinic is on animal health and care. The practice is well established, with between 4 and 6 qualified vets who all speak English. It is a fully functional animal hospital and their facilities and services available include:

• Pet Vaccination Clinic
• Orthopedic and general surgeries
• Digital X rays
• Ultra sound scanning
• Ultra sonic dental cleaning
• Nebulizing
• Pet micro chipping and microchip reading
• Pet Exportation/Importation consultation
• Breeding consultation
• Medical laboratory
• Hospitalization care
• Pet Grooming salon
• Dog Training
• Pet Shop/ pet food/ accessories/ training equipment.

The patients at the hospital include dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, cows and calves, goats, and many more species.

During your internship, you'll work with domestic pets and farm animals – a great opportunity to closely observe and learn from the local veterinarians. You may also get the opportunity to assist with minor procedures and you also generally assist the staff on their daily routines.

If opportunities arise while you're there, you may get a chance to travel with the vets out to farms to treat any animals in need. These could include cattle, goats, chickens, pigs, and domestic pets as well.

You'll assist the vets in animal handling, disease identification, pregnancy diagnosis and routine vaccinations.

Surgeries usually take place after 4pm. The hospital is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. and those are the hours that you'll generally work, although these can change at short notice, depending on what's needed. The hospital sometimes stays open until late in the evening if there are lots of surgical operations to be done. Again, you may be asked to work during this period, but this will all add to the benefit you'll derive from the work experience.

The Veterinary Clinic has been given details of the experience that you require by Purdue University (as listed here) and has confirmed that they will be able to provide those experience elements for you.
