SRI LANKA

CULTURAL IMMERSION ACTIVITIES AND TURTLE CONSERVATION VOLUNTEERING PROGRAMME

Start your volunteering adventure with a fun-filled week of cultural activities that will immerse you in Sri Lankan culture and give you an in-depth insight into this fascinating country. Then follow this with volunteering on a project that works with sea turtles, a critically endangered species.

The "Introduction to Sri Lanka" week is designed to ease you into the lifestyle and the culture of the country. At the same time, you'll also get to some sightseeing, cultural training and fun activities. You'll learn some language, meet the local people, and visit temples and fairs in the local region.

Your second and subsequent weeks will focus on conservation that works towards preventing the extinction of sea turtles. You'll help in the rehabilitation and release back into the sea of turtles that are usually victims of commercial fishing. Apart from treating injured and sick sea turtles, you will also be involved in protecting nests and rescuing eggs so that they can be hatched without incident in the safety of our hatchery.

INTRODUCTION: CULTURAL IMMERSION ACTIVITIES WEEK:

The best way to embrace Sri Lanka is in our Introduction and Cultural Immersion Activities Week in Kandy, where you will get familiar with the culture and people of Sri Lanka. During this week you'll get acquainted with Buddhism, the mysterious mythology behind this culture and you'll visit a few temples, including the famous Temple of the Tooth.

You'll receive an Induction into the do’s and don’ts regarding safety, transport and women travelers. Additionally, we'll enrich your experience with language sessions so that you're able to talk to the locals. You'll also find out what a traditional Ayurvedic massage feels like!

Amongst other things, you'll also witness an ancient Kandyan dance performance and, last but not least, you'll receive cooking lessons in wich you'll get to see, smell and taste Sri Lankan cuisine.

This is a week of activities, kicking back, exploring, relaxing ... and getting to know your exciting new home!

TURTLE CONSERVATION AND RELEASE PROGRAMME:

There are many challenges in the battle to prevent the extinction of the turtles. Many turtles fall victim to commercial fishing and are in need of veterinary care. Your group will contribute to the efforts to protect turtle nests and rescue turtle eggs. This work is based at the project centre on the beach near Ambalangoda, in the southern part of the island, in an area where most tourists are denied access.

Your work here will be exceptionally varied, but also immensely interesting and rewarding, especially when you witness the release of a turtle back to the sea, often after many months of care.

However, before that stage can be reached, there is much work to be done, work that is often far from glamorous, but it does have its plus side, in that you are doing it in what must be one of the most beautiful spots in Sri Lanka, if not the world.

In addition to those mentioned already, day-to-day activities include:

  • The collection of eggs
  • Identifying different kinds of turtles
  • Hatching of the eggs
  • Treatment for injured and sick turtles
  • Feeding the turtles
  • Cleaning of the turtle tanks
  • Cleaning the turtles
  • Releasing turtles into the sea
  • Explaining about the turtles to visitors
  • You'll also get the chance to learn about sea plants.
  • Cleaning the beach and general area
  • Feeding
  • And for the artistically inclined there may well be various painting projects
  • We often run ‘Awareness Camps’ for groups of tourists who make a special trip to this area to see our work. While you are with us, you'll gain the expertise to enable you to assist in some of the instruction.
  • We also work closely with many local and international conservation partners and regularly collect data to ensure our efforts are having the results we desire, and you will also be part of this data collection process.
