COURSE CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION

During your programme you'll have lessons with one of two private tango teachers who regularly teach in various places throughout Buenos Aires. Both teachers are very famous in Argentina. The lessons scheduled for you are:

  • Five private tango classes per week, each lasting two hours. These will usually be taken in the afternoons but there will be some flexibility, depending on your teacher’s schedule.
  • You will get a chance to attend a Milonga (for free, included in your programme). A Milonga is an open Tango party where all levels mix together. People from all over come to this weekly social event, where everyone dances together and continually change couple - all lots of fun!

If you would like to add more hours to your weekly schedule in order to give you a more intensive Tango Dance learning experience, we can do that for you. There will be a supplementary charge for the additional hours.

Your dance schedule will allow plenty of time for sightseeing and absorbing the experience of being in Argentina.

To read about a volunteer's experience of Tango in Buenos Aires please check out the Blog of Sally Blake, a Travellers volunteer embarking on an adventure to perfect her dancing skills! http://sallycatway.com

The elusive spirit of Argentina is present everywhere in Buenos Aires. The national dance, the Tango, is perhaps the best expression of that spirit - practiced in dance halls, parks, open plazas, and ballrooms, it is a dance of intimate separation and common rhythm, combining both an elegant reserve and an exuberant passion.

HOSTEL ACCOMMODATION

You'll live a hostel situated in a beautifully renovated historic building in Downtown Buenos Aires, very conveniently located for exploring the city, with an endless supply of cafes, restaurants and shops nearby. It has a sociable atmosphere and you'll be made to feel welcome with a real chance to immerse yourself in Argentine culture.

You'll share a dorm room and have access to kitchen facilities. The hostel has a common area where you can relax and watch TV or DVD’s and there is also a piano and a ping pong table! It also has Wi-Fi and a couple of computers and a small roof terrace with chairs to enjoy the sunshine.

FOOD:

You’ll be given an allowance for your meals (breakfast and dinner, lunch is excluded for projects in Buenos Aires). This arrangement is to give you the flexibility to sample the great Argentinean food. Right on the door step of the hostel there are many cafes and restaurants with great priced menus just waiting for you….the choice is yours!

HOST FAMILY ACCOMMODATION:

If you would prefer a more cultural experience, we can arrange for you to stay with a local Argentinean family. Host family accommodation gives you the opportunity to become more integrated in the local community and is ideal if you want to practice your Spanish (Basic/intermediate Spanish is required to stay with a Host Family). You'll have a comfortable private room and use of the kitchen. Breakfast and dinner is provided every day and you will usually share a typical Argentinean meal with your family.

Facilities in host families do vary, but you can express your preferences regarding the type of family that you stay with (for example, a family with or without children, pets, etc). If you stay in a host family you will be given contact details of other volunteers living in Buenos Aires so that you won't miss out on any socialising!

If you choose the host family option, there is an additional supplement.

LOCATION | SIGHTSEEING:

The romance of Argentina takes one's breath away. From the northern deserts to the southern Andean Cordillera, from Iguazú Falls to the magnificent desolation of Patagonia, Argentina's geography is varied and stunning. Argentina is geared up to thrill - from nights tango-ing in the chic quarter of Buenos Aires to gaucho riding in the grasslands of the Pampas.

Cosmopolitan Buenos Aires:
Buenos Aires is one of the most exciting cities in Latin America. Tango was born here, restaurants serve all manner of world cuisines, bars play the latest music, cafés spill on to the streets and nightclubs allow dancing throughout the night. This fabulous city is renowned for its sophistication and has a surprisingly European feel about it. BA is reminiscent of Paris and its tree-lined avenues and frequent plazas have a beguiling, faded elegance.

Downtown, the Plaza de Mayo is the traditional focus of activity. Nearby Avenida 9 de Julio is popularly known as the world's widest thoroughfare and, with its nine lanes of traffic, is truly a pedestrian's nightmare! Avenida Santa Fe is the most fashionable shopping area.

RESPONSIBLE & ETHICAL TRAVEL:

How we and you ensure our impact on the local community is positive and not negative:

We employ local staff in each destination they operate and our Cultural Courses are no different. Local Tango instructors, both male and female, are employed to teach volunteers providing not only an authentic experience but often much needed work and opportunity to locals. Each week volunteers are taken to a Milonga club to dance with locals and just experience the Tango scene. Community spirit in these clubs is incredible and foreigners are welcomed.

Where possible and afforded, volunteers are encouraged to purchase Tango equipment, such as shoes and clothing, in one of the many local Tango shops. The best quality at a fraction of the price in Europe. N.B. Purchase of equipment is optional and not obligatory.

The hostel accommodation on this project is locally owned and all the staff are from the neighbourhood. Where possible, produce is purchased for breakfast in nearby shops, helping provide authentic local cuisine. Alternatively host family accommodation is available. Families are selected based on their desire to provide real cultural exchange and at the same time a warm family environment.

Breakfast and evening meals are included in the programme, provided through a monthly allowance. Volunteers are able to spend this allowance each day in any of the many local restaurants and cafes, tasting local cuisine. You can taste food from all over South America not just Argentina.

As highlighted above, by taking part in this course you’ll be directly influencing local economy and supporting international tourism, an important part of the countries general economy.

Social Responsibility: The information we provide prepares you for your placement and how to deal with the local people. It also briefs you on the Do’s and Don’ts and makes you aware of the possible impact of your behaviour. However, you are also expected to do research on the country you're going to and their customs and culture. The research you do will help you to gt the most out of this exciting travel and experience opportunity.

Cultural sensitivity: Volunteers receive an induction and orientation on arrival which covers things like being sensitive to the culture you’re in, everyday processes which will be different to what you’re accustomed to, how to have the maximum beneficial imprint and the minimum negative impact.

We stress the importance of responsible tourism, cultural differences and acceptable/unacceptable conduct. Where appropriate, volunteers are briefed on local customs, particularly those that are different to the volunteer’s accepted norm.

Economic Responsibility: By living in the volunteer house provided by the project you’ll, again, be providing much needed income and employment to the local population. The house is simple and built from natural materials and you are actively encouraged to recycle, be efficient with energy and water usage and preserve the natural surroundings. All food is provided and sourced locally. Your transport to and from the project will usually be either on a bicycle or walking again contributing to green efforts.

For 25 years our volunteers have lived in local communities around the world, spent their money with local traders and brought funding to the projects they work with. Travellers employs local staff and works with local support staff. This helps to fund the project directly and through bringing money into the local community.

In general, the organisations we work with around the world often struggle to financially support and maintain the work they do, so every penny raised makes a real difference.

Our aim is to create always a Win-Win-Win situation in terms of the benefits for, (a) the local communities and institutions you work in, (b) our Volunteers, i.e. you, and (c) for Travellers. We do not embark on any project that is not beneficial to all three of these stakeholders.

The impact of pollution: Transport to and from the project is left up to you to choose (we cover costs for you to use public transport). Public transport is always recommended by us and all nearby public transport routes are shown to all new arrivals. If taxis are required, you'll be encouraged to share with other volunteers in order to lessen the impact of pollution wherever possible.

Having regard for the local community by being consciously aware of your impact is encouraged in all our documentation for all our projects in all our destination countries. This is because we feel very strongly that many countries are subject to, for example, water shortages, high cost of energy and high impact of energy usage, the negative impact of litter and general pollution. Thus we encourage you to be aware of these possible impacts so that they contribute positively and not negatively to the community in this respect

POSITIVE EFFECTS THAT TRAVELLERS HAS ON THE LOCAL ENVIRONMENT:

We provide you with many tips on how to be a responsible traveller regarding the environmental impact you have.

We want you to be immersed in the culture, by living and working with local people. We work with local communities, local charities, local government bodies and local schools. We also often partner with local organisations whom we have vetted to ensure that they are committed to the projects they run, that they have the same responsible attitude to the local community that we do, that they are eco-friendly and have ethical policies.

In our projects and in our headquarters offices, we take an environmentally responsible attitude towards recycling and reusing of waste products. We encourage all participants to offset their flight emissions via a carbon offset scheme. Our volunteers are given pre-departure Information that encourages them to minimise waste and reduce their use of water and electricity, in other words, to live sensitively in the environment that they’re working in.

Travellers also give donations as and when required by projects. This is often done through our charitable arm, The Bridge The Gap Foundation. Our projects enable vital conservation, research, care and education work to take place directly where it is most needed. Our volunteers contribute, all over the world, to projects that would not exist without them.

REVIEWS AND FEEDBACK:

SALLY BLAKE
British
Tango Dance in Buenos Aires

I'd been dancing 5 months in the UK when I did a one month Tango placement in Buenos Aires with you guys. I stayed on in Buenos Aires to dance and I ended up writing a guide book for tango travellers to Buenos Aires - took me about two years from start to finish, but I got there in the end! You can see full details of it here: http://sallycatway.com/happytango and it is now available on Amazon around the world!

I hope that all is going well for Travellers Worldwide and that lots of people are still headed out to Argentina to do all sorts of exciting things! For sure, when we start out on adventures, we never quite know where they might lead, do we? I am very happy that I started out on mine!

JADE WESTCOTT
British
Tango Dance Course in Buenos Aires
plus Spanish Language Course

Learning about the Argentinean culture is probably the main experience, and of course, gaining knowledge of the Tango and Spanish.
In terms of living out here and doing the placement, I think that pretty much anybody would be suited. The city itself is very easy to get around and there is many things to do, so I think even a novice traveller should be able to cope here.

In regards to the Tango and Spanish, of course you need patience as you are learning something new (if indeed it is new to the person), but I cannot see if there would be any reason for it not to suit those that were wishing to undertake such a placement.

SUZANNA LONG
British
Tango Dance Course in Buenos Aires

I chose the Tango placement as something which would be a bit different, give me an opportunity to do something creative and give me an insight into the local culture. It certainly met all these aims, and most of all was a lot of fun.
I enjoy dancing as a past time, but I think anyone could have a go at this. The combination of the individual private lessons as well as one group lesson per week also worked well. I learnt things in different ways at the different classes, and it was good to meet up with local Argentineans at the group class.
All in all, I fully recommend the tango placement as very rewarding, creative and great fun. I found Melina and Adriana [Travellers staff] really nice and very approachable too!

SARAH PAYNE-BAADER
British
Salsa Dance Course in Buenos Aires
plus Tango Dance Course
plus Spanish Language Course

My placement in Buenos Aires was absolutely the best I could have imagined. I chose to attend Salsa, Tango and Spanish classes for two weeks.
Although I arrived by myself I was introduced to other Traveller's volunteers and was put in a room with some of them and we immediately made friends. The ladies running the programs in BA were both the loveliest, most helpful people, they were always there to help us with anything that went wrong or just to go out for nice dinners!

Both my dance teachers picked me up at my hostel for my first salsa and tango lessons to go to the respective studios where my lessons would be held 3 times a week (one of which was a huge mirrored room in one of Buenos Aires' best salsa clubs, to my delight!). The teachers were all fantastic, patient, friendly and helpful about filling me in on everything about BA and I learnt incredible amounts in such a short time.

If I did it again I would do it exactly the same way except for twice as long!! A fantastic experience overall and one I will never forget!

CLAUDIO PISTOVA

Tango Dance Course in Buenos Aires

I'm having a really good time and everyone here is so nice and helpful. Melina and Adriana are so cool. I've already had two tango lessons which were so much fun :-)
My Spanish lessons are going well too.
But as it comes to Argentinean lifestyle ... I need a bit more time to get used to it as I'm not used to eating so late or going out at 2am. Saying that, I must admit that I had fantastic weekend partying.

I’m really happy, thank you so much
