WHY DO A WORK EXPERIENCE INTERNSHIP?"I have just finished my medicine interviews and I cannot do justice to how important my experience in India was to my application, so much so that yesterday I received an offer from Manchester (where I really wanted to go!). Not only this but my experience contributed to me getting a job in the NHS. My experience in a foreign healthcare setting gave me something great to talk about in interview and as a result I gained employment as a healthcare assistant (or auxillary nurse) on a surgical ward, again something that impressed at interview, and a job I am not sure I would have gained without my Indian experience, especially when you consider how competitive job applications in the UK are today!" Joe Harris, Medicine, India In a world of competition where an army of graduates are lining up for the top jobs, what would set you apart from the crowd and make employees look twice? How about spending 1-6 months working at a top institute in a developing country? Nothing shows as much motivation, initiative and passion as arranging your own cultural experience abroad. Education establishments and employees are looking for that little bit extra today. Opening your mind and your horizons by living and working abroad is a huge personal and professional achievement that you will always be proud of. Not to mention the lifetime of memories and friends you’ll make along the way. Many opportunities for work experience are available. As well as an extremely steep learning curve in your chosen profession, we’ll make the whole experience easy, safe and fun for you! You don’t necessarily need previous qualifications or any experience and if you don’t see what you’re looking for here, give us a call, maybe we can arrange it for you. All work experience placements are specifically tailored to suit your preferences and requirements, to ensure you get as much out of the experience as possible. We will have detailed discussions with you by phone about what you are looking for before your departure and we will ensure that you are happy with your placement with excellent daily care and support throughout your time in country, including being met at the airport and receiving a full induction into your new area. You will usually work Monday to Friday leaving your weekends free for travel and adventure with other Travellers volunteers during your placement! Placements tend to be social and lots of fun as well as educational. Our Work Experience placements are flexible and run throughout the year so you can pick your own dates and lengths of project – anything from 2 weeks to 6 months. If you don’t see a programme in your field, please call us: +44 (0)1903 502595. We frequently set up new placements in response to volunteers' requests. Travellers takes great care in ascertaining your specific requirements and then ensuring that you have a placement that best suits your needs. We want to ensure you gain maximum benefit and experience from your placement. Below are brief descriptions of some of the placements currently available. Please select the country where you want to work and you'll find detailed descriptions of all aspects of the project you'd like to do. Please remember that if you don’t see one that suits you, email or call us (+44 (0)1903 502595) and we can probably arrange one for you: “You don't have to be extremely outgoing and confident [to go on a Travellers project]. Naively my preconceptions of the type of person you had to be to do something like this were of a superhuman, uber confident, go-getter so I was a bit dubious before coming here as I was fully aware I was a bit lazy and a little shy. But in my opinion I have gotten more out of this trip than some of the really confident people. I would recommend this placement to everyone and anyone - its easily the best move I have ever made. The experience I am gaining while in China is beyond invaluable.” – Louis Potter "Heading out to Cape Town was a gamble for me. I'd just finished a summer as a freelance journalist covering cricket and didn't have much work for the winter. I found out about the Travellers scheme and it seemed ideal – a month on a sports desk to build by experience and make contacts. It couldn't really have gone any better. The team at the Cape Argus were brilliant. I perhaps had a little more experience than some of the other people who'd joined them so when they realised cricket was my passion they gave me plenty of freedom. I wrote a couple of features over the Christmas period and helped to cover the South Africa-England Test at Newlands. During the Test I met a Cricinfo journalist – a month later I was offered a job on the website where I have been Editorial Assistant for 18 months and was part of the team that covered England winning the Ashes last summer. It was thanks to the Travellers placement that I'm now in my dream job." Andrew McGlashan "After graduating with a law degree in 2005 I did a Travellers Worldwide voluntary placement with a commercial law firm in Argentina in order to gain more legal work experience. As a volunteer legal assistant I researched legal issues, drafted contracts and attended client meetings. I had to work both on my own initiative and in a team. The placement allowed me to make an informed decision about my career. I decided that I wanted to work in the public legal sector, rather than for a private law firm. Next week I will start my new job in the Legal Services section of a successful County Council. I genuinely believe that my gap year experience helped to make me a more attractive candidate because of the transferable skills I developed, such as being adaptable, problem solving and vital communication skills." Lucy Keenan "I completed a month's TV work experience in Perth, organised and arranged by yourselves. In the UK, I had struggled to obtain media work experience and thought your program was an excellent way to combine the two. The stay was great; the accommodation was nice, I had contacts in Perth in case I ran into trouble, and made loads of new friends. I then went on to travel all of Australia. I came back to the UK from my travels in May and in September I was offered a 6 month contract with MTV as their creative intern, and upon nearing the end of my contract, have now been offered a year contract at the BBC as production co ordinator. I just wanted to say a massive thank you for my experience, both work and culturally, in Australia. I would hugely recommend this to anyone, especially those who want to break into media via an alternative path. Even for those who do not want to obtain a career in the media, my employer said she was impressed with the month I did in Australia, because it showed I had the initiative to get out there and do something productive, and it was something that stood out amongst the hundreds of CVs she received! I really hope you continue with your programs across the world, and that people benefit from them as much as I did. It really is something I will never forget. Thanks a million" Carmen Butcher "With retrospect, my decision to travel to Sri Lanka as a Travellers Worldwide Volunteer has proved to be amongst the most critical and rewarding choices of my life to date, allowing me to travel in safety with complete confidence, and to progress both professionally and personally.” Andrew Pierce |
