TRAINING FOR YOUR TEACHING PLACEMENT
At Travellers we believe in the value of
training and through our training division (TEFL Time) offer you a choice of courses to increase the
effectiveness of your placement and make the most of your time out
there. Training will also increase your confidence and give you the
chance to chat with a seasoned Travellers volunteer.
Your trainer is Paul White, a qualified
teacher, trainer and ecologist who has travelled the world and has taken
part in four Travellers projects as well as visiting first-hand many
more. (read his biography). The courses take place in London (Kings Cross)
which is convenient for national travel links and has lots of great
accommodation. You have a choice of two courses: The TEFL
weekend course or the one day seminar.
1. TEFL WEEKEND COURSE
The TEFL qualification (Teaching
English as
Foreign Language) is a
valuable, professional and internationally recognised tool for people
wanting to teach English abroad. A TEFL understanding will considerably
improve your confidence and effectiveness as a teacher. It is also a
lifetime qualification which will...

Next steps
On completion of the course you
receive a certificate and letter of reference stating the material
you’ve covered and the skills you’ve gained.
After the weekend you can also
continue your training with an optional distance learning course if you
wish. This will go into greater depth and introduce topics not covered
on the weekend course. During the courses you will submit two written
assignments. When you have completed both the weekend and distance
learning courses you will receive the TEFL 100 hour certificate.
Travellers volunteers get a discount on the distance learning course as
well.
More about these courses can be
found on our TEFL division website:
www.tefltime.com. But don’t forget – you will get
a generous discount on the prices shown on that site. As a Travellers
volunteer you will pay only what is shown on the bottom of this page.
2. INTENSIVE 1-DAY TEACHING
SEMINAR
This is an alternative to the
TEFL courses for those who do not want a certificated qualification. It
is only available to Travellers volunteers.
Seminar Content: This will
provide 8 hours tuition, giving an introduction to most of the topics
mentioned in the weekend TEFL course above, plus one teaching practice.
A training booklet (but not textbook) is provided for you to keep.
If you can participate in one
of these courses, it will add substantially to your preparation for your
placement and may also enable you to meet other volunteers doing their
placement at the same time and in the same place as you.

“Hi Paul, I often think of that Saturday when I was so apprehensive about the venture I
had somehow stumbled into!! You'll never know how worried I was about my ability
to cope…especially as everyone else seemed so capable. However, it has turned
out to be the best thing I ever did and you helped me so
much. You encouraged me and gave me a real boost. I absolutely love it here in
Kenya, I
am living the African life and I have so many new friends. I am so excited about
the new involvement and very thrilled that I was even considered. I never could
have imagined the change in my life in the last 8 months, I'm a very different
person from the one you saw at the Thistle Hotel. I feel younger (hope I look
it!), have put a little weight on and am so very happy. Thank you to everyone at
Travellers Worldwide, special thanks to you, Paul.”

was also selected to be interviewed for a feature in Good Housekeeping Magazine.
