As a Travellers Sports Coach you can do more than just coach your sport. In various countries we have partnerships with local teams which will give you the opportunity to train with and possibly play for a local team in your particular sport, getting you totally involved in the local sporting culture. This is an incredible way to become a part of a different culture, whilst making friends instantly, without any barriers.

We work with a number of well established and professional sporting clubs and organisations, such as the New Zealand Cricket Players Association, Racing Football Club and Nania FC a top football side in Ghana. Each placement is different. You can coach sports to local children in Brazil in a dirt playground, or you can work with a UEFA Champions League winner in Ghana, work with ex All Black cricket players in New Zealand, coach and play sports with Olympians in Australia or work with Olympian and World champions in New Zealand - there really is something for everyone and all levels!

In some parts of the world where we work, children don't have any opportunity to play competitive sports. In some of our countries, you may have the opportunity to organise a Travellers Tournament as part of your placement. This is something the children really enjoy and benefit from. We also provide you with free coaching manuals for your sport(s).

Note: If you have a special ability in any area not mentioned in the list of sports, please contact us and we can probably arrange for you to teach it somewhere!

THE TRAVELLERS SPORTS VISION

At Travellers we're passionate about providing underprivileged children around the world with good professional coaching. So much sporting talent often goes unnoticed in the countries where we work, as the children don’t have exposure to sports, access to proper coaching, or encouragement to fulfil their potential. Travellers is dedicated to exposing these children to a variety of sports and much enthusiasm - through our volunteers' coaching and exciting Travellers Sports Tournaments!

You'll be helping these children and communities through developing and coaching your sport. You'll also add significantly to your own knowledge and understanding of your sport.

“I’ve been training for a long time, but it wasn’t until I started trying to teach others, breaking down and observing the individual skills -from the coach’s point of view- that I began to understand the game on a deeper level… and my own technique’s improved dramatically and quickly!” L Beisly

PLAYING SPORTS ABROAD

Playing sports abroad is a great way to get totally immerged into the country's sporting culture, socialise and make friends with local people, keep fit, improve your skills and have fun! As a Travellers Sports coach, in some of our countries you may have an opportunity to train and possibly play for a local team (if selected!).

Depending on which project you choose, you may be able to coach your sport during the day and get involved training with the local teams of your preferred sport in the evenings. We work with a variety of sports clubs and teams. For many volunteers this aspect of training, playing and competing really is a memorable and precious highlight of their placement.

TRAVELLERS TOURNAMENTS

In some of our countries, children don't have the opportunity to play competitive sport. As a Travellers Sports Volunteer, you may have the opportunity to organise a sports tournament between the schools where you work. Organising these tournaments is a very good way to end your placement as you'll see how your hard work and effort have paid off. The children really learn from it and everyone always has an amazing and fun day!

When on your placement you will work with the Travellers Country Organiser in organising these tournaments. We also provide you with a manual that you can use as additional help in organising the tournament.

ABOUT COACHING SPORTS

Sports coaching placements are very valuable for the children in the villages, towns and cities where we work as it teaches children team skills, social skills, communication skills and a sense of belonging. The interaction is a great way to improve the children’s spoken English, which is a huge asset for their future life.

Sports placements vary in terms of the age groups, the hours of work, where and how you will work. Some are part-time and after school where you can combine coaching with English teaching or another project. Some are full-time.

Sports’ coaching usually takes place in underprivileged schools around the world, with children from less advantaged backgrounds. However we do also have links with some private schools which allow us to use their sporting facilities for both the private school students and invite kids from many of the underprivileged schools in the area.

The sizes of class vary, depending on the school and the country. Coaching hours tend to range from 8 to 25 hours per week, usually over 5 days. Weekends are usually free to travel with other volunteers, sightsee, relax or party!

Your accommodation for each country is described on the project pages (check the blue links above). Accommodation situations range from sharing a house with other Travellers volunteers, to living with a host family, or perhaps a backpackers or guest house - it depends on the country that you're in and your preferences.

FREE COACHING MANUALS
We will provide you with a large number of coaching manuals for each sport - these manuals have been produced in-house by our Sports Manager and are very useful in helping you to plan coaching sessions for your students.
