Entries in the MAY 2005 Competition
Closing date: 31st May 2005

Polly Taylor on her BIG FIVE GAME PARKS PROJECT - Phinda Reserve, South Africa.

Rhino Darting - As well as darting an elephant we were also lucky enough to be around when they darted a rhino. The rhino was darted in order to put a series of notches in the ear so that it can be identified.

This picture is of Kath another volunteer, Helen the elephant researcher and myself in the vehicle that we used to track and monitor the elephants.

A Baby Elephant and a group of Lions that we were lucky enough to have the chance to photograph.

Amy Simpson

Photos taken during her placement in Rajastan in India, January-March 2005

Left: Amy with some of the children she taught. She says that as well as teaching the children, she learnt a whole lot about herself!

Bottom Left: A montage of photos put together by Amy that were taken when she and some other volunteers went to visit the children in their homes.

"Taking the cubs out for a walk!" - The photo is of 3 month old Cleo (on the left) and Casper (on the right) on their first ever time outside their enclosure. Cleo was not keen! Taken at the Lion Breeding Centre in Zimbabwe in September 2004.

David Youldon

Five photos taken during four different projects in South Africa, Malaysia and Zimbabwe during 2004/2005

Left: "Melanie" - This beautiful lion is called Melanie, but she was usually a little stroppy so I took full advantage of her playful behaviour that day. Taken at the Lion Breeding Centre in Zimbabwe in Sept 2004.

Bottom Left: "Elephant Operation" - I was very lucky to be at the world's first ever elephant sterilization, part of an ongoing population control program, on my Big 5 placement at Phinda in South Africa. The 5-hour operation was performed on July 16, 2004 by vets from Disney and San Diego Zoo.  I got to monitor Maduku's (the elephant in question) for several weeks after the operation to make sure she was recovering well. I am happy to say she made a full recovery!

Bottom Right: "Teaching English as a Foreign Language" - Nothing comes close to the feeling you get when an orangutan looks you in the eye. They are wonderful, warm, endearing and very inquisitive creatures. Nala here was practicing how to conjugate her verbs. Taken at Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre January 2005

"Serval" - At Amakhala reserve in South Africa in May 2004, six serval were held in an enclosure to acclimatize before being released into the park. I was lucky to have the chance to get so close to such an elusive creature and watch as they disappeared into the undergrowth on their release date. Part of the African Conservation Course in South Africa.

Jennie Elliott on her combined project at Colombo Zoo and
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage in Sri Lanka

This photo is of Roshan [Travellers Sri Lanka Manager] with the leopard cub (looking a little nervous!)

"Feeding a very big baby!"

Di Hanson on one of her projects - this one at the Lion Breeding in Zimbabwe

They're just big kittens... most of the time!

Iain Robertson

Photo taken during his placement on the Lion Breeding Project in South Africa in January 2005

"This is a photo from my time spent on the lion breeding project in South Africa - It's of Aurora, a female white lion cub who at the time was about 7
weeks old. She was getting to grips with a piece of garden furniture!"
