one of his many Travellers
voluntary placements. |
| Paul White is a
Science teacher and former Ecologist
working in an English comprehensive school. He has been a friend and
associate of Travellers since 2001 when he ventured out to Kerala in South
India for a life changing volunteer teaching placement. |
| During this
placement Paul fell in love with India, as well as with the wonders
of travelling. The following summer holidays Paul mounted his backpack and
again headed off into the unknown, this time Ghana. Paul spent the
summer of 2002 teaching science to primary school children in Accra and
upon his return he began assisting Travellers
to promote the
benefits of volunteering abroad because he felt very
passionate about it. Since this second placement Paul has given
many talks and presentations to schools and colleges around the UK
summarising his travelling experiences and imparting the benefits of
participating in such a worthwhile adventure. |
| In 2003 Paul
ventured off again to Asia with the lure of the turquoise waters
and aromatic flora of Malaysia. Travellers arranged Paul’s teaching
placement in Borneo where he worked at a primary school, secondary
school, youth centre and a school for the mentally handicapped. Quite an
experience. He still managed to find time to explore the underwater world
of the magnificent coral during his time on this warm island. It was
whilst Paul was in Malaysia that his role within Travellers expanded and
he became the teaching consultant and somewhat of an expert in teaching
in foreign countries and as a volunteer in
different cultures. |
|
Another of his Travellers Project destinations was
Vietnam where, as usual, he explored the country and became familiar
with their culture and way of life. |
| Since his return
from Malaysia, Paul has continued his work
with Travellers in other countries, supporting
the organisers and liaising with the schools. He has made appearances on
TV abroad, inaugurated various events and enjoyed being involved in local
communities. He is still in touch with many of the friends he made whilst
on his placements. |
|
“To have the privilege to live and work
with so many people of different cultures has made my life more complete,
given me greater understanding and tolerance, and made me a better person.
I have Travellers to thank for that” (Paul White) |
| Paul also delivers
the Travellers Teacher Training Day in
London, where volunteers benefit from his unique teaching expertise and
travelling experiences. |
| Paul now travels
independently in many parts of the world, from North Africa to South East
Asia to the frozen wastes of the glaciers in
South America. He lives in Essex, and is happily married to Gill, his very
understanding wife. They have two grown up children and four cats. Paul
plays bass guitar, badly, and is a passionate scuba diver. |
|
Paul is shortly leaving to return to South America to
explore the continent more fully, and will be spending some time with our
Organiser in Brazil - again he will be bringing back with him
first-hand knowledge of our projects in Foz do Iguassu that he can
pass on to volunteers who attend his Teaching Day Workshop. |
| His ambition is to
see more of the world, and he is always planning his next trip, or talking
about his last one! |
| Paul
is a delightful man with a great outlook on life and a fabulous sense of
humour! Having
participated first hand in many Travellers placements, plus his intensive
teaching background, he is an all round excellent source of information
for new or nervous volunteers preparing for their adventure. |
| A very friendly and interesting
man that Travellers is delighted to have on board. We hope that you get a chance to
meet him and ask all the questions you can think of! |
