“After graduating with a law
degree, I did a Travellers internship with a commercial law firm
in Argentina in order to gain more legal work experience. I
researched legal issues, drafted contracts and attended client
meetings. I had to work both on my own initiative and in a team.
The placement allowed me to make an informed decision about my
career - to work in the public legal sector, rather than for a
private law firm. Next week I start my new job in the Legal
Services section of a successful County Council. I genuinely
believe that my gap year experience helped to make me a more
attractive candidate because of the transferable skills I
developed, such as being adaptable, problem solving and learning
vital communication skills.” Lucy Keenan, Argentina
CASE STUDIES:
Laura Marie Rodgers, Australia, Law “The work experience itself was great, I loved the Law Firm and
have actually been working there now for nearly 6 months with
the option of a sponsored job. All the staff at the law
firm were lovely, couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful
and now I class them all as my friends.

Anon, Ghana, Law "So far
I have been really impressed with everything, the people are
really friendly and I have been very well looked after by my
host family and everybody else. I've probably been most
impressed by the nature of the work I've been doing. I feel like
I'm getting much more responsibility than I would be able to get
in England, and dealing with Human Rights work which is very
interesting as well. I'm getting to prepare proper reports and
proposals and not just doing menial tasks. I have also been on a
trip to the opening of the Ghanaian Parliament and I didn't
really expect any of this when I came!”
Caroline Allen, Ghana, Law “First impressions of both Ghana and the law placement are
very positive: lovely people, very friendly, and the work Lara
and I will be doing looks really interesting - lots of Human
Rights stuff.
My placement is going really well: the Law firm where we're
working is really friendly, and we've seen some very interesting
work. A lot of what we've done has been human rights based - our
trip to Ada last week involved helping to train local community
leaders as paralegals so that they can recognise human rights
abuses when they take place and then advise their people on the
best action to take.
We've been working very closely with one of the lawyers at the
Trust. She's made a real effort to involve us in all the work
she does, and has even taken us to christenings and funerals so
that we get a really full picture of life here!”
Victoria Smith, Australia, Law “Everything
went really well at the law firm and me and Laurie are happy
with the placement. We have been given work on files to do and
are very glad to be given the independence to work as we would
if we were lawyers here.”
