“My internship was] the single best experience of my life ... I could sink my teeth into big things; the first major project I worked on was a directory style website. To begin with I was just entering information for the Knysna franchise, and then I was asked to make a few Flash animations for the banner headers and the logo. When I discovered that ShowMe also had Facebook pages I casually mentioned that I worked on them before so could I try to jazz the pages up. The feedback I got once it was live was the best feedback I ever received!"

CASE STUDY:
Andrew Coupe-Harris, South Africa, Graphic Design & Advertising

“When I first applied for that internship a year ago I never dreamed it would lead me to this, I never thought those 2 months would turn out to be the single best experience of my life or that it would open my eyes to what I could really be capable of. I certainly never thought that once my time was finished I’d have a chance to return.

I came out here for the work experience, just so I could have a pretty looking CV so companies back home would notice it. It turned out to be the best thing I've ever done, I am SO glad I took the risk because it's opened my eyes to what I can see and do with my life. This is Andrew, on location. Back to the studio."

Where to start? Let me see...
I had been working full time as a Digital Designer for about 3 years when I decided a change was needed. Since Travellers are one of the few companies that offered a placement which matched my skills I quickly found myself on their website. I had no desire to go to South Africa and being one that usually doesn’t take risks, I just stuck to looking for another job. But I found myself going back to that page several times. I downloaded the PDF packs and read through every word. I even got in touch with the company themselves to ask about availability and dates and sent them my CV to judge my suitability for the internship.

The more I thought on the idea the more I liked it, so one day I just decided what the hell - for once I’ll take a risk and do something different. Within 4 weeks I was leaving the country for the first time on my own, to a country I never visited before - as you can imagine I was rather nervous!

I quickly learned that I was in luck, the Garden Route of South Africa is a fantastic place to visit - both full of vibrant life and colours yet at the same time it has a casual, chilled out atmosphere about it. I was surprised how quickly I settled.

The company I worked for made me feel very welcome and before long part of the team. They quickly shared their professional knowledge with me and they also invited me to come along to photo shoots and sign fittings to see how they work. Since the work ethic is so much more laid back here we also have a laugh in the office, enjoy drinks after hours and arrange social get-togethers.

More often than not I could sink my teeth into big things; the first major project I worked on was a directory style website. To begin with I was just entering information for the Knysna franchise, and then I was asked to make a few Flash animations for the banner headers and the logo. When I discovered that ShowMe also had Facebook pages I casually mentioned that I worked on them before so could I try to jazz the pages up. The feedback I got once it was live was the best feedback I ever received! Other jobs included logo design ideas for a few eco friendly brands and more general office bits.

In the following 8 weeks the trip turned out to be simply the best time I’ve ever had. I worked with three great and very skilled people during the week and spent my weekends doing everything from diving with Great White Sharks to having Braais (BBQs) on the beach with a wonderful collection of fellow Travellers volunteers.

It was so good I may have mentioned to my co-workers that if the job were permanent, I’d stay in a heartbeat. But all too soon the time was spent and I returned to the UK feeling so much better about everything.

I stayed in touch with the company, then one day the CO sends me an email to officially offer me a position! Up to now the UK job hunt was turning up nothing, so once again it came down to ‘what the hell, you’ll only regret it if you don’t.’ So I agreed; I finally bagged myself a job!

When I first applied for that internship a year ago I never dreamed it would lead me to this, I never thought those 2 months would turn out to be the single best experience of my life or that it would open my eyes to what I could really be capable of. I certainly never thought that once my time was finished I’d have a chance to return. I feel very lucky that it turned out the way it has.

If you are thinking of going overseas yourself, I can only suggest this - don’t let nerves or fear put you off. If you want to do it, just do it! At the least you’ll meet great people, have a fantastic time and feel better for it. And if you find yourself in Knysna, keep an eye out and say Hi!”
