GALAPAGOS ISLANDS: TEACHING ENGLISH & OTHER SUBJECTS

ECUADOR

. .
Teach in one of the most fantastic places on the planet! Really make a difference at this wonderful school, whilst living and breathing the Galapagos islands  - a truly amazing experience! This project is based on the beautiful island of Santa Cruz.

Your work on this exciting project will be very varied - you can help teach English to children between the ages of 4 and 11 years old, and if you have any special interests (Art, Music or Sports, for example) you could assist in these areas, too! The school also has facilities for disabled children and you could help with any of three disabled classes.

And if that’s still not enough for you, there’s the chance to help out with the maintenance of the school, for example, you could help improve the water system in the school so that it's safe to drink and not so intermittent! Make a real, lasting difference to the indigenous children at this school in many different ways!

PROJECT OVERVIEW
The school we work with is a public school in Puerto Ayora, on the beautiful island of Santa Cruz. There are 330 students who range between the ages of 4 and 11 years old.

The school has 20 teachers, all of whom are enthusiastic and friendly even if they don’t speak English! There is one English language teacher at the school, Andrea. She is always willing to help if you have any questions and she values your help immensely. The school also has a very active Parents' Committee - this is a large group of fathers who want the best for the school and their children. They offer breakfast every morning to all children. They’d be very appreciative it if you wished to assist with the preparations, etc.!

The school needs your help in many areas. Most importantly, as an English language native speaker, you offer the children an opportunity to practice speaking the language. The majority of the children speak little or no English at present but there is an growing need for it on the Galapagos islands due to the ever-increasing numbers of tourists. Students who do not speak English find themselves disadvantaged because of this. Your fresh ideas and enthusiasm are needed to encourage both teachers and students!

Volunteers also have the opportunity to help in the school's Art classes, which are great fun and where your help is also really needed. Many children on the island come from relatively poor backgrounds and the attention you show them benefits them greatly. There’s also a chance to teach them to be creative through other outlets, such as Music. At present there are no funds for a music teacher at the school, so if you have any musical talents these would also be greatly appreciated!

The school is also equipped with facilities to educate disabled children. There are three disabled classes in the school and the teacher of the smallest ones (who range from 6 to 8 years old) really values the help and support of volunteers as well as this class does not usually have any assistants.

There’s also a chance to get out into the fresh air and help with school improvements. The garden was recently improved by other volunteers who planted trees and the parents recently built toys for the children to play with during recess. Unfortunately, the ground is rocky and these rocks have to be removed in order let the children play safely. There is no running water system at the school and they are planning to construct one - volunteers are needed to help with this as they just don’t have enough manpower without you!

ABOUT THE PROJECT
This project offers you the chance to ‘muck in’ and help where it’s really needed. Although your project may be teaching English (or Art, or Music), there is the chance to get involved with other areas of volunteering within the school and you'll be able to help where it’s needed.

Although the seeming lack of organisation within the school may not be what you’re used to, the Ecuadorians have a unique skill of being organised whilst seeming to be disorganised! You'll need to accept this as a cultural difference and trust that you’re welcomed and very appreciated by the school. If you have any doubts or questions at all, you should just ask, as the school will probably not even be aware that you’re confused! Have a little confidence, show a little initiative and accept that things work slowly in Ecuador (the residents of the Galapagos realise that they live in the most beautiful place in the world and don’t rush themselves!) - you’ll have a fantastic time!

WHAT YOU'LL GAIN FROM DOING THIS PROJECT:

  • An exciting, never-to-be-forgotten adventure into the diverse culture in Galapagos Islands

  • The enormous satisfaction of helping disadvantaged children and knowing that you made a difference to them.

  • New skills, more confidence, a greater understanding of a different culture, invaluable personal and professional development.

  • An entry on your CV or résumé that will put you head and shoulders above most others in the job market

  • And best of all ... an unforgettable experience!

WORKING HOURS:
Your hours of work will be between 7am and 12.45pm, which is when the school is open. You’ll have the afternoons off to explore and enjoy the fantastic Galapagos islands

SPANISH LESSONS :
If you have no previous knowledge of Spanish, your project will include 1 week of Intensive Spanish lessons at a fantastic and very well-established Spanish school in Quito. You will arrive into Quito at the start of your project and be met by our Travellers organiser in Quito. If you choose to take Spanish lessons you will fly out to the Galapagos after your intensive Spanish course. Your flights to the Galapagos islands are included in your project cost regardless of if you are taking Spanish classes or not.

All the teachers at the school have taught Spanish for 8 or more years and between them they have developed a great many resources to make the lessons lively and fun. They also periodically organise interesting and enjoyable activities in order to introduce the Ecuadorian and Latin culture to their students - most recently they've been cooking Ecuadorian dishes in classes! It's a great, fun way to learn!

LOCATION:
You’ll be based on the island of Santa Cruz, in a small village, but don’t worry, there is lots to do, including evenings out at restaurants and nightlife to enjoy. There are also the beaches and many cultural interest sites.

In the afternoons and during the weekends you can go on day tours, snorkeling tours and diving tours to the other islands. You can also visit the Charles Darwin Centre, which is located in the centre of Puerto Ayora.

Besides that, there are some beautiful beaches to visit. Tortuga Bay has two beaches, one for surfing and one for swimming. Also the Charles Darwin Center has an own beach, it is a bit smaller, but closer than Tortuga Bay.

Climate: Pack appropriately! June to December is the cooler, cloudy and dry season. December to June is the warm, sunny and rainy season.

YOUR ACCOMMODATION AND TRAVEL

Getting there: You will most likely fly into Quito in Ecuador where you will be met by Travellers staff and have an induction and an overnight stop-off here. Your volunteer work will start on Monday; however, you will fly from Quito to Santa Cruz during the weekend. Your return flight from Quito – Galapagos islands is included in your project price! You will be met at the airport by our project director and taken to the accommodation and settled in before your induction.

ACCOMMODATION & FOOD
During your stay at the Galápagos, your accommodation will be with a host family or in an apartment.

Housing: You will stay with a host family on the island of Santa Cruz in the neighborhood of Puerto Ayora. This can either be in an apartment or you get a room in the house of the family. It’s unlikely you’ll have much interaction with the host family, but you’ll have access to the entire house and are made to feel at home. More often than not you’ll stay in an apartment with other volunteers, which happens to be owned by a host family.

Food: Food is not included on this project. Within the host families you can make use of the kitchen and can cook for yourselves. If you don’t fancy cooking for yourself all the time, there’s plenty of opportunity to eat out. Although the majority of food and drinks must be transported from the mainland, there are still economic ways to eat. At lunch time many restaurants offer ‘almuerzo’ (soup and a main dish) and there are a variety of restaurants in the vicinity – from economical to extravagant!
