LIVE
AND WORK IN AN AMAZING CULTURE IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY. IT WILL DO WONDERS
FOR YOUR CV ... AND YOUR KNOWLEDGE ... AND YOUR CONFIDENCE ...
Working in the health
sector in the developing world is a real challenge. For social,
cultural, but mainly economic reasons, people don’t seek medical
attention until their condition is very advanced or they are serious
pain. The contrast between Western medical facilities and practice and
those of the developing world is huge, but this in itself contributes to
your experience, knowledge and compassion.
If you're studying medicine, or indeed, if you're already working in the
field, a placement with Travellers will give you a working experience
unlike any you've gained so far. This is a different country, culture
and society.
The placement is located in Arusha, situated at the foothills of
Mount Kilimanjaro. This country has an amazing variety of things to
offer, from beaches, lakes and mountains to safaris, wildlife and a huge
cultural diversity with almost overwhelming friendliness.
Requirements: You must either be studying Medicine or a related
field, or be working in the Medical sector. All nationalities and welcomed with
open arms. You don't need to speak the local language either. Necessary
requirements for a medical volunteer are initiative, adaptability and
enthusiasm.
The
experience you will gain on this work experience project will be an
excellent entry to your CV, going a long way to help you stand out in
the crowds of job seekers!

YOUR medical PROJECT IN tanzania:
One of the hospitals we
work with is St Thomas Medical Centre. Here you'll work under one of the
best surgeons in Arusha. He will be your supervisor during your placement.
There are 32 staff members in the team at
this hospital, and they are spread throughout many different departments,
including:
Pharmacy
Laboratory
Dental
ICU
Surgery
Physiotherapy
Eye Care
Medical wards.
The type of work you
will be allocated to depends on your own capabilities and experience. You will normally sit down with your supervisor when you arrive to
set up a timetable for your placement.
It is difficult to be specific about the day-to-day work you will do as it
is so varied and spread across many areas. The hospital is very busy with a
multitude of duties and responsibilities, so you will probably be worked
very hard in most areas!
You may work in a variety of medical departments, where you can either
assist or shadow the staff members, depending on your level of experience.
You should be supervised all of the time while you are there and given help
and direction. Your workload will depend on yourself and your ability, as
well as your confidence with the work, and as the staff members' confidence
in you grows.
You will be given basic and general on the job training by your supervisor,
and further responsibilities should become available for those with medical
experience.
The working day is generally from Monday to Friday, from 08.00 to 14.00, but
you may also be able to work on some Saturdays - this is when many of the
operations take place and these would be good for you to observe.
Your work may take you into all departments. You're likely to be involved in
the day-to-day running of the hospital and clinics, observing or directly
assisting the doctors and nurses. You can help out in simple but practical
ways, vastly increasing your own knowledge and understanding of medical
practice.
If there is a particular field you want to specialise and gain more
experience in, we may be able to arrange something for you. However, if
you're not qualified, you won't be allowed into operating theatres.
Any experience you have in the field of Medicine will help your application
so please ensure you add this when applying. We will also ask you for your
CV/resume, showing any experience you may have.
When you take part on this placement, it is required that you bring along
your own white lab coat and a stethoscope as equipment is not always freely
available.
Project Dates and Availability and your Working Hours:
The project runs all year round, and is available for
a minimum of 1 month up to 3 months.

your questions. In the photo on the right, she's sitting with two local
