LIVE
AND WORK IN AN AMAZING CULTURE IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY. IT WILL DO WONDERS
FOR YOUR CV ... AND YOUR KNOWLEDGE ... AND YOUR CONFIDENCE ...
This work experience
placement is based at a small local community newspaper that is
published weekly. A small newspaper gives you the opportunity to gain
experience across all aspects of newspaper journalism and you'll also
get an insider's view of how this type of publication is run.
If you're thinking of making journalism your career, a placement with
Travellers will give you a head start and some working experience. If
you're already working in the field, you'll get a comparative
experience in a different country, culture and society.
The placement is located in Arusha, situated at the foothills of
Mount Kilimanjaro. This country has an amazing variety of things to
offer, from beaches, lakes and mountains to safaris, wildlife and a huge
cultural diversity with almost overwhelming friendliness.
Requirements:.
You need to be studying Journalism or working in the field. All nationalities are welcomed with
open arms. Necessary requirements for a journalism volunteer are initiative,
adaptability and enthusiasm, plus good written and spoken English.
You don't need to speak the local language as the newspaper is English
medium. The
experience you will gain on this work experience project will be an
excellent entry to your CV, going a long way to help you stand out in
the crowds of job seekers!

YOUR journalism PROJECT IN tanzania:
You'll be working at a
small local community newspaper called The Arusha Times, where you'll
become involved in a variety of tasks. The
Times is privately owned and was established in 1995.
The newspaper itself is
published on a weekly basis and comes out every Saturday, with over 7000
copies sold each week. It is printed in English and also has a fairly
extensive web edition.
The Arusha Times
covers a wide variety of local news in and around Arusha, as well as other
stories from around Africa. It reports on a wide variety of subjects,
including editorials, sports, local events, restaurant reviews, obituaries
and advertisements.
You'll work in a variety of roles at the newspaper. Depending
on your initiative and skills, you may be assigned to take on one or more of
the following:
Photography
Proof reading
Advertising
Feature articles
Reviews
Layouts
Websites
Once you arrive, you'll sit
down with the editor and go through any stories or reports that need
following up or starting. If you feel that you can use your own initiative
and find your own stories then this may be a fantastic opportunity for you.
If your story is of good
enough quality and interest, you may get it published. Most of our
journalism volunteers around the world have had many stories published and
have built up a good portfolio while on their placement.
In our other
destinations, some of our Work Experience volunteers have looked no further
than their fellow Travellers volunteers for stories! They have written
articles on what the volunteers achieve in the schools, or events such as
the official handing over of donated computer equipment or toys, clothes and
bedding to children in the orphanages. One or two have done in-depth
stories on the difference that has taken place in a community from the time
that Travellers starts working with them to present day. And of course, the
Travellers Sports Tournaments - these are always a great hit to report.
In order to succeed on this
project you'll need to display high levels of initiative, be hard working,
have good written and oral skills and be a team player.
When you take part on
this placement, it is required that you bring along your own good camera,
and a laptop if possible (but not essential) so you can work on the move.
Requirements:.
You need to be studying Journalism or working in the field. All nationalities are welcomed with
open arms.
Project Dates and Availability and your Working Hours:
The project runs between September and May each year
and is available for a minimum of 2 weeks and maximum of 2 months.
You'll most likely work from Monday to Wednesday,
starting at 08:00 and normally finishing at 17:00 (or later if you have
assignments to finish).
Your Travellers Project Co-ordinator on the Placement
Once you apply for this placement, all your arrangements will be taken care
of by Kelly Day, Travellers UK-based Project Co-ordinator for Tanzania.
She'll liaise with you to discuss your needs and will be able to answer all
your questions. In the photo on the right, she's sitting with two local
children while on an inspection trip to Arusha.
Once you're in Tanzania, you'll be well looked after by our Tanzania
Manager, but Kelly will remain in touch with you throughout your stay.

Most of our volunteers who choose to live with host families all agree that
their placement was made more enjoyable by their home life experience. They
also agree that they get an added "something" out of the placement - a rare
opportunity to experience life as a family from the inside
Most of the houses have all
the basic facilities - coming equipped with TV, radio and all importantly…a
western style toilet. However, we must make it clear that not all
accommodation can provide such luxuries.
All our hosts are very friendly and welcoming and the
families will look after you very well and make you feel part of their home.
