FILM/VIDEO WORK EXPERIENCE AT A TV STATION IN AUCKLAND
This placement would be an excellent way for you to
improve your CV and gain vital experience working within film and video.
Volunteer at a fast paced television station in Auckland
where you will have the opportunity to undertake a variety of roles, such
as editing camera footage, sound effects and graphics.
The TV station we work with is
a free channel that is shown in medical waiting areas, which aims to
engage, educate and entertain patients before they see a medical
professional. The station broadcasts via the internet to over 200
medical centers across the country and they use the latest ground
breaking technology video on demand to broadcast their programs.
The TV's program schedule is
comprised of short, punchy health-related documentaries and quick tips,
magazine-style entertainment segments - everything from fashion to DIY -
and easy-listening music videos.
The TV station was the first
station to ban junk food and soft drink advertising to make people more
aware about what they eat and to promote a healthy lifestyle.
ABOUT YOUR WORK AT THE TV STATION: You will be working as a film/video editor at the
TV station assisting the other editors with various films for upcoming broadcasts. You will be working in a small team at the TV station
and will get very involved with the work.
As an assistant editor you
will be responsible for assembling the final product as a sequence
consisting of shots from the raw camera footage, dialogue, sound effects and
graphics. This is a key role in the post-production process and your skill
determines the quality and delivery of the final product. You will be
working closely with the director to meet his or her requirements.
On this placement
your
work process will involve:
receiving a brief, and maybe an
outline of footage and/or a shot list, or screenplay;
assembling all raw footage, with
the camera shots either recorded or manually transferred onto
high-format video tape in preparation for inputting into the
computer;
inputting uncut rushes and sound,
and synchronizing and storing them into files on the computer;
digitally cutting the files to
determine the sequence of the film and determining what is usable;
creating a 'rough cut' of the
program/film and determining the exact cutting for the next and
final stages;
re-ordering and tweaking the
content to ensure the logical sequencing and smooth running of the
film/video.
Additional work
activities may include:
overseeing the quality and progress
of audio and vision engineering and editing;
consulting with the director,
producer and/or client throughout the post-production process;
familiarizing oneself with the
style of specific directors;
experimenting with styles and
techniques;
selecting the most effective shot
of a scene in terms of drama, story relevance or continuity;

Maori settlement in Auckland was
at least 800 years ago where by different tribes built there fortifications
on the various volcanoes in Auckland. When the British arrived in 1840 they
claimed Auckland as the capital city of New Zealand until Wellington became
the capital 25 years later.The city is modern and vibrant - a fun
and friendly with beautiful surrounding islands and harbour.
Some of its more famous attractions include
the sky tower, Rangitoto island, the harbor, the
Hauraki gulf islands and the
many extinct volcanoes that are in Auckland which provide great views of the
city.
Auckland has restaurants
to suit all tastes - the most popular cuisine is New Zealand lamb which
can be ordered at many restaurants around the city and is well worth it.
For meals in local restaurants, a trip to Auckland's inner city centre is well worth the effort -
it bustles with activity and offers a range of choices of restaurants.
