ABOUT YOUR WORK AND COACHING:

You'll be involved in a number of different activities during the day. A typical day will consist of assisting with the administration of the NZCPA, which  includes, for example:

  • Handling cricket and other projects given to you

  • Running and coaching the Hooked on Cricket program

  • Organising cricket and other events

  • Marketing

As well as working at the NZCPA you will have the opportunity to train with our partner cricket team in the evenings and if you are good enough you may have the opportunity to play for them on the weekend.

Hooked on Cricket
The Hooked on Cricket program was established by the NZCPA to enable New Zealand's professional players to give something back to the community. The focus of the programme is to provide coaching programmes for the underprivileged communities in New Zealand, namely Maori and South Pacific Island children.

Each participating school receives an on site coaching session with a first class cricketer from New Zealand. You'll volunteer on the Hooked on Cricket programme alongside New Zealand's professional players. At the end of the coaching week each school is invited to take part in the Hooked on Cricket tournament, allowing each school team to have a game captained by a first class cricketer.

Having the opportunity to meet some of the NZ cricket team will be a highlight for the children, not to mention you as a volunteer!

The Hooked on cricket program takes place in Auckland and other areas of New Zealand. You'll assist with coaching on the Auckland programmes and may attend other venues in the North Island.

FREE COACHING MANUALS AND FREE SUBSCRIPTION TO A COACHING WEBSITE

As a volunteer sports coach with Travellers you have access to a large number of coaching manuals for each sport - these manuals have been produced in-house by our Sports Manager. These manuals are very useful and will help you to plan coaching sessions for your students.

As well as coaching manuals you also have a year’s free subscription to a Coaching website: www.grassrootscoaching.com. With this membership (which normally comes with a price tag of £39.99), you automatically become a member of the International Coaches Association (ICA) and join a community of coaches from over 65 countries.

This project runs for 6 months of the year from September - March

The Hooked on Cricket programs run from late September and coaching takes place in each different school venue for one week. In Auckland, the Hooked on Cricket program takes place in October. Working hours are fairly flexible but you will generally be required to work from 9:00 - 4:00 or 5:00.

On this project you will have the opportunity to train and possibly play with a cricket club in Auckland. The cricket season runs from 1st October through to 31st March and training times are from 5:30 – 7:30 on Tuesday & Thursday

Games take place on the weekends during the season.

Please Note: If you wish to come on this project you must be 20+ years old, come for a minimum of 2 months and have a working knowledge of cricket. You don't need previous cricket coaching experience but you should be confident in your abilities as a player and willing to work hard.

REQUIREMENTS: POLICE CHECKS

Within New Zealand Law it is compulsory for all volunteers who work with children to undergo a police check. These checks are done to ensure the safety of children in New Zealand.

The checks are a simple process and we will provide you with all the details of what identity you need to take with you. On your arrival in Auckland, our New Zealand manager will complete the checks with you and take you through the process. As soon as you have registered, you'll be allowed to start working with children.

We will ensure that you have all the relevant information before you come to New Zealand.

Maori Village on North Island

ACCOMMODATION AND LOCATION:

You'll be accommodated in a centrally located lodge that is friendly and relaxing, making it ideal for long-term stays. You may have your own room or you may share a room with other volunteers. There is a communal kitchen and storage area for cooking meals and plenty of space to relax.

Entertainment at your accommodation includes cheap internet access, TV and free pool table. You are literally a stroll from the Sky Tower, harbor and waterfront. Accommodation is very central and close to the main train station and shopping district. Buses are also only a few minutes away to take you to parts of Auckland and New Zealand or to the many other ‘things to do’!

The city centre boasts great shopping, restaurants and pubs or head over to the viaduct for more pubs, nightclubs and multicultural cuisine. You'll get to work via bus, which is close to your accommodation.

Maori settlement in Auckland was at least 800 years ago where by different tribes built there fortifications on the various volcanoes in Auckland. When the British arrived in 1840 they claimed Auckland as the capital city of New Zealand until Wellington became the capital 25 years later. The city is modern and vibrant - a fun and friendly with beautiful surrounding islands and harbour.

Some of its more famous attractions include the sky tower, Rangitoto island, the harbor, the Hauraki gulf islands and the many extinct volcanoes that are in Auckland which provide great views of the city.

Auckland has restaurants to suit all tastes - the most popular cuisine is New Zealand lamb which can be ordered at many restaurants around the city and is well worth it.

For meals in local restaurants, a trip to Auckland's inner city centre is well worth the effort - it bustles with activity and offers a range of choices of restaurants.

TRAVEL:
You have the option to arrange your own flights or we can assist you with your flight arrangements. If you would like us to do this for you, we will liaise with you regarding available flights and dates to suit you. Where possible, we arrange for two or more people to travel on the same flight and we will let you have the names and telephone numbers of other volunteers on your flight, so that you can chat to each other or even meet up before leaving for your placement.

We can also arrange your flight dates to give you additional time at the end of your project for travelling around and sightseeing - this is a fascinating country!

You will fly into Auckland where you'll be met by our local organiser. From the airport you'll be taken to your accommodation. Several days later, once you have settled in and recovered from the flight, you will be introduced to the staff on your project.

To read about Support & Backup we provide, please click here.

VISAS: We will liaise with you about specific requirements, if any, and make the Visa process very easy.

Where possible, all flights we arrange for you have changeable return tickets because many of our volunteers choose to extend their stay once they are in their destination country. Changeable return tickets enable you to do so, within the limits of your visa and the level of your air ticket, of course. If you choose to book your own flights, you should endeavour to get a changeable ticket.
