WORK CONTENT

1. YOUR PROJECT AT THE CLUB:
This element of your programme will take place in the late afternoons and evenings. You'll work at a cricket club located opposite the Auckland harbor, just a short ferry ride away from your accommodation.

There are excellent facilities and you'll coach a number of junior teams. You'll also have the opportunity to coach, train, and possibly play for the senior men's teams, if you get selected.

The junior teams at the clubs fall under the following age groups:

  • 6 - 7s softball,

  • 7 - 9's little league,
  • 10 - 13's hardball

If you  would also like to play cricket on this project, you can do this with a number of senior teams. There is a good mixture of standards at the club so there is something for everyone.

As well as training and playing for one of these teams, you may also be able to coach them if you're considered good enough. There are a number of senior teams that you can train with and play for:

  • 4 senior 1 day grades (50 over cricket)

  • 5 senior 2 day grade cricket

THE CRICKET SEASON AND COACHING TIMES:
The cricket season runs from:

  • Pre Season 1st September - 1st October (Indoor Cricket)

  • Seniors 1st 0ctober - 31st March

  • Juniors 22nd October - mid December & February - March

Coaching and training times are as follows

  • Juniors: 3:45 – 5:30 - Monday - Thursday

  • Seniors: 5:30 - 7:30 - Tuesday - Thursday

Games take place on the weekends during the season. The juniors play in the morning - you'll have the opportunity to coach the junior team, putting everything you have taught them into practice on the field. In the afternoon it will be your opportunity to play with the seniors. Out of season there will be no opportunity to play cricket at the club.

A note from the Coaching Director to Travellers: "Richard, hope all's well. As promised, just a short email to update you on things at the Cricket Club. Stu and Mark continue to be extremely valuable coaches. I have been able to utilize their coaching skills in a variety of ways, from providing specific 1-on-1 batting coaching to hardball junior players, Little-League 'intro to cricket' skill sessions, and running team fielding skills practices, depending on what is required on the day. Always, their enthusiasm and passion is obvious, and certainly both add plenty of value to the practices they are involved in. They have been coaching for three days a week, and their timekeeping and appearance is always excellent.  It has certainly been extremely successful from my perspective.' Bruce Warner - Coaching Director

2. YOUR SPORTS PROJECT AT THE SCHOOL
The School Sports Project will take place during the day. For this element of your programme, you will be working at a school located in Auckland. You will be working at a school located in Auckland. The sports are generally coached by season, but if you wanted to coach a sport that was not in season, or if you wanted to introduce a new sport to the children, the school would welcome it as long as it was of benefit to the children. Each school offers different sports so if there was a particular sport that you were interested in coaching please let us know and we will make arrangements for this.

ACCOMMODATION AND LOCATION:

Front view of the Hostel

Dining area of the Hostel

You'll live in a centrally located hostel that is friendly and relaxing, making it ideal for long-term stays. You will be sharing a room with other volunteers. There is a communal kitchen and storage area for cooking meals and plenty of space to relax.

Entertainment at your accommodation includes cheap internet access, TV and free pool table. You are literally a stroll from the Sky Tower, harbor and waterfront. Accommodation is very central and close to the main train station and shopping district. Buses are also only a few minutes away to take you to parts of Auckland and New Zealand or to the many other ‘things to do’!

The city centre boasts great shopping, restaurants and pubs or head over to the viaduct for more pubs, nightclubs and multicultural cuisine. You'll get to work via bus, which is close to your accommodation.

Maori settlement in Auckland was at least 800 years ago where by different tribes built there fortifications on the various volcanoes in Auckland. When the British arrived in 1840 they claimed Auckland as the capital city of New Zealand until Wellington became the capital 25 years later. The city is modern and vibrant - a fun and friendly with beautiful surrounding islands and harbour.

Some of its more famous attractions include the sky tower, Rangitoto island, the harbor, theHauraki gulf islands and the many extinct volcanoes that are in Auckland which provide great views of the city.

Auckland has restaurants to suit all tastes - the most popular cuisine is New Zealand lamb which can be ordered at many restaurants around the city and is well worth it.

For meals in local restaurants, a trip to Auckland's inner city centre is well worth the effort - it bustles with activity and offers a range of choices of restaurants.
TRAVEL:

You will fly into Auckland where you'll be met by our local organiser. From the airport you'll be taken to your accommodation. Several days later, once you have settled in and recovered from the flight, you will be introduced to the staff on your project.

You have the option to arrange your own flights or we can assist you with your flight arrangements. If you would like us to do this for you, we will liaise with you regarding available flights and dates to suit you. All arrangements for your flight bookings/payments will be fulfilled by Murray Rogers Travel Limited, ATOL No. 6856. Where possible, we arrange for two or more people to travel on the same flight and we will let you have the names and telephone numbers of other volunteers on your flight, so that you can chat to each other or even meet up before leaving for your placement.

Where possible, all flights we arrange for you have changeable return tickets because many of our volunteers choose to extend their stay once they are in their destination country. Changeable return tickets enable you to do so, within the limits of your visa and the level of your air ticket, of course. If you choose to book your own flights, you should endeavour to get a changeable ticket.

VISAS: We will liaise with you about specific requirements, if any, and make the Visa process very easy.

We can also arrange your flight dates to give you additional time at the end of your project for travelling around and sightseeing - this is a fascinating and wondrous country!
