PROJECT OVERVIEW
The Practice was established in 1985 and within three years won the first of its many awards. They are engaged in a wide range of projects within Australia and the South-East Asia - Asia Pacific region. Their work embraces Architecture, Urban Design, Interiors. (Equally importantly, they're very welcoming and friendly - typical Australian traits!) These projects include Master-planning of Marinas, Waterfront and Golf Resorts, Urban Master-planning, Commercial and Mixed Use buildings,  Retail, Medium Density Residential, Sport and Recreation, Entertainment, Resorts – Health, Spa and Tourism, Educational and Civic Buildings, Low Cost Housing, Space Planning and Interiors.

The Architects Practice has a wide-range of top-tier repeat clients which includes education, health, science, university, multiple residential, commercial, retail, sport and recreation. They undertake projects which range from $5M to major multi-stage mixed use redevelopment projects totalling $800M. The majority of current work is in the $50 to $100M range.

As students work directly for the designers and Directors, they experience high end projects, primarily at the conceptual design phase. In addition to the pure architectural and interior design projects, they also undertake urban design master-planning for the State Planning Authority and for Local Government where they assist with social infrastructure planning, strategic planning needs assessments and have developed a reputation for establishing design benchmarks for a range of community projects.

The Architects Practice also have a strong involvement in development in the north-west regions of Western Australia which requires a specific design approach to address remote location logistics, climatic extremes and cyclones. Much of this remote area design involves prefabricated building technologies.

LOCATION:
The Practice offices provide a modern, open-plan work environment. Their staff are predominantly in the 25 to 35 age group, but they have a full cross-section of age, cultures and experience. The West Perth location is a premium office precinct on the western side of the Perth CBD. It is located on major bus routes, a 10 minutes walk from the train station and the vibrant cafe precinct of Subiaco is a 15 minute walk. A free bus system operates throughout the CBD and connects with all public transport nodes.

WHAT YOU'LL GAIN FROM DOING THIS PROJECT:

  • An exciting, never-to-be-forgotten adventure into Australia and you'll learn about the Aborigine culture that makes this country so fascinating!

  • You'll learn a lot from experts in your field about how they work in a culture that is very different to what you're used to.

  • New skills, more confidence, a greater understanding of a different culture, invaluable personal and professional development.

  • An entry on your CV or résumé that will put you head and shoulders above most others in the job market

  • And best of all ... an unforgettable experience!

This type of work experience is a great way of enhancing your CV or résumé and making you stand out from the crowd in this increasingly competitive world.

Architectural Student Roles & Responsibilities:
To provide design presentation support to the core design team with a combination of high order computer presentation skills in using programmes such as Autocad, Photoshop, 3D Studio Max, Revit, Sketch-up and the like.

Students also may undertake a general design assistant role for the Directors of the the firm. This is particularly beneficial for students in gaining an insight into all aspects of architectural practice.

Students are often given opportunities to lead the co-ordination of selected aspects of projects, such as compilation of an approvals submission, illustration of presentation concepts or the reproduction co-ordination of a design competition entry.

Staff and Working Hours:
There is a team of around 10-15 people and working hours are around 9-5 but may vary depending on circumstances. The type and depth of work you'll be involved in will depend on your own skills and abilities and on the length of your project - if you're there for a longer period, you'll have more opportunities to get involved in projects than if you're there for the minimum period of 8 weeks.

  • 3D package

The Practice likes having "interesting" people. They do take on local interns but they feel strongly that having overseas volunteers will broaden things and contribute cultural differences to the working dynamic. They look forward to, and enjoy, having foreign interns and volunteers!

Please note that this project is not available during December and January. Also, the work that you'll be involved in depends on what is available at the time of your placement.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • You need to have completed your third year of University.

  • We will ask you to submit a portfolio of work showing a mixture of ability and computer work like CAD will be very important.

  • The work should be challenging and you should be prepared to receiving training in different elements.

  • You need to be prepared to be flexible with the work, able to work with, and get on with, people.

  • Lastly, an ability to work as part of a team, but you will also be expected to be able to handle your own work ... self-reliance and independence will help you make the most of this wonderful opportunity!

ACCOMMODATION:  YOUR ARRIVAL AND INTRODUCTION TO THE COUNTRY

Travellers Organiser Jenny Ashworth will look after you during your visit to Perth!
Jenny Ashworth, Travellers Australia Manager and long-time friend of our UK Team!

Accommodation: Your accommodation is located in the CBD (Central Business District) of Perth, Western Australia. Therefore you are very central, close to the main train station and shopping district.

You'll be accommodated in a centrally located lodge that is friendly and relaxing, making it ideal for long term stays. You'll most likely your own room, but will share a bathroom with others on your floor. There is an excellent kitchen and storage area for cooking meals and plenty of space to relax.

Entertainment at the Lodge currently includes a pool table, cheap internet access, arcade machines and cable TV (Foxtel), to name a few, but with all the sunshine Perth has, you’ll be out and about enjoying the many outdoor activities! You are literally a stroll from the Swan River and free CBD transport. Trains and buses are also only a few minutes away to take you to Fremantle, King’s Park or to the many other things to do in the region!

The city centre boasts great shopping, restaurants and pubs or you can head over to Northbridge for more pubs, nightclubs and multicultural cuisine. You'll get to work via bus, which stops outside your accommodation.

Food:  You'll be given a budget for your food. This will usually be on a monthly basis, although it may vary if you are staying for a shorter period of time. The food budget is sufficient to cover basic meals of breakfast and dinner and does not include 'luxuries' such as wine, etc. It does not include lunch but you can make sandwiches in the kitchen at the Lodge or buy your lunch out when you're at work.

You'll receive your first monthly budget when you arrive. Most people stock up on basics, such as butter, sugar, tea & coffee that don't need to be bought as frequently and then budget their money to last until the following allocation.

A little about Perth: Perth was built on the banks of the magnificent Swan River over 150 years ago and is now a city rich in culture and filled with theatres, art galleries and museums. The city is modern and vibrant - a fun, friendly and 'laid back' place, with clear skies and a sunny climate. Western Australia is locally known as the 'state of excitement!'

Some of its more famous attractions include Kings Park, Scarborough Beach, Fremantle and the Swan River. Fremantle (or as the local’s call it, ‘Freo’) is the city’s port and is rich in history. At weekends you will find markets, entertainment and plenty of alfresco style cafes to laze in.

Perth has restaurants to suit all tastes - the most popular cuisine is of course the great Australian BBQ. Barbeque facilities are abundant in local parks - take your own food and cook up a feast, Australian style! For meals in local restaurants, a trip to Perth's inner city centre is well worth the effort - it bustles with activity and offers a range of choices of restaurants.
TRAVEL:

You'll fly into Perth where you'll be met at the airport by one of our staff. From the airport you'll be taken to your work and your accommodation and introduced to your hosts. You'd be well advised to prepare yourself for an almost overwhelmingly friendly welcome!

You have the option to arrange your own flights or we can assist you with your flight arrangements. If you would like us to do this for you, we will liaise with you regarding available flights and dates to suit you. All arrangements for your flight bookings/payments will be fulfilled by Murray Rogers Travel Limited, ATOL No. 6856. Where possible, we arrange for two or more people to travel on the same flight and we will let you have the names and telephone numbers of other volunteers on your flight, so that you can chat to each other or even meet up before leaving for your placement.

VISAS: Visa’s are not required for a stay of 90 days if you are a British Passport holder. If you're from another country, we'll liase with you about your visa requirements, if any, and make the Visa process very easy.

Where possible, all flights we arrange for you have changeable return tickets because many of our volunteers choose to extend their stay once they are in their destination country. Changeable return tickets enable you to do so, within the limits of your visa and the level of your air ticket, of course. If you choose to book your own flights, you should endeavour to get a changeable ticket.

We can also arrange your flight dates to give you additional time at the end of your project for travelling around and sightseeing - this is a fascinating and wondrous country!
