SURFING LESSONS

Think Australia - think surfing!
With endless miles of unspoilt beaches and glorious weather, Australia is the one of the best places to learn to surf – and you’ll have so much fun trying!

Australians are known for their enjoyment of the great outdoors and with over 7,000 beaches - more than any other nation, who would blame them! So get involved and learn how to surf whilst volunteering with Travellers in Australia. You can take anything from a 1 - 3 day Surf camp tour with professional instructors and all equipment provided.

Are you already doing a Travellers project in Australia and wanted to learn to surf or improve the surfing skills? Then this SPECIAL is for you! You'll learn to surf with a reputable tour company and surfing is their life! They hope to share the experience of riding the waves with you on either a 1-Day Tour or an Extended Tour (this is 2 or more days). So, depending on your budget or time constraints, you can learn to surf!

Australia is the largest island in the world with more beaches than any other country, so why not give surfing a try! Australia certainly ticks all the boxes; it boasts great weather, varied scenery, miles of unspoilt beaches, interesting wildlife and vibrant cities. An attractive destination, Australia has it all - sun, sand and surf.

About surfing in Australia
Surfing is a huge part of the Australian way of life and is embedded in their culture. Most Australians live near the beach and the coast making it one of the best countries when it comes to finding good surfing beaches, plus with its huge coastline, a wide variety of breaks can be found. Australia has also produced many great surf champions, for example, Mark Occhilupo and Layne Beachley. Download and print additional

"I had a brilliant weekend at Lancelin surf camp!! This opportunity is ideal for anyone interested in learning to surf or perfecting their existing skills. The waves are great for beginners and intermediate students as they break slowly and don't crumble. All of the instructors were really friendly and keen to get you as hooked on surfing as they are! They'll give you individual tuition until you can catch waves on your own and when you do they'll be there to record it on camera. I was aching like crazy the following day, but we got back in the water and did it all again!! I would definitely recommend this trip to others, it was so much fun and deserted Lancelin is a great escape from the city."
Travellers' Vicky Boughton after her first surf camp.

A Quick History of Surfing in Australia:
In the beginning of the 1900's, it was prohibited for anyone to swim in the sea between 6:00 in the morning and 8:00 in the evening. Whoever breached the law was imprisoned and not seen well by the community. But as time passed, the law also lost its effect and 1901 was the year it officially became legal for people to swim at Australian Beaches outside of those hours.

By 1950 the first imported wood surfboards had arrived in Australia. They were copied and adapted for Australian style and materials. Australian surfboards became lighter than their American and Hawaii counterparts, smaller in size and weight. By the 60's the Surf explosion had started and by the 70's surfing was attracting multitudes to the beach, provoking a revolution and a new direction in the sport; becoming professional and profitable.
