ONE INTERN'S COMMENTS ON HER EXPERIENCE:

“Everybody was so nice there, so I never had problems during my stay. The doctor's and interns working there were so friendly and I really had a great time with them! It was great. From the first day on I felt like a family member. They all have been extremely supportive and did everything to make my stay unforgettable! We had so much fun!
From the time I got my answer for my first e-mail I felt that my plans are in good hands. You have been there for all my questions and concerns. I really want to thank you for everything. ACCOMMODATION AND LIVING IN DIANI
Your accommodation is located in Diani, close to the beach, and your accommodation may vary depending on the project you chose, you will usually live with a host family. The opportunity to live and immerse yourself in the culture by living with a family can be the most enjoyable part of your placement. Many volunteers have 'adopted' their host families (and been adopted by them) and they stay in touch with each other for many years afterwards.

The hosts are all very nice! Many of our volunteers cry buckets when they leave, because they feel like they’re leaving home. Living with a family in the local culture is a true cultural experience that you cannot gain as a ‘tourist’.

Most host family accommodation is located no more than 1.5km away from the beach.

Host family homes all have the basic facilities, but some may also have TV and Radio and a Western style toilet – the levels of facilities will vary depending on the family’s financial position.
Depending on availability, you may be accommodated in a hostel or similar type of accommodation.

Food: Your food will be prepared for you, and if you are not going to be there for lunch then a packed lunch will be provided. Food will be a mixture of Western and delicious, exotic local meals and includes fruit, fruit juice, etc - you'll only need pocket money and funds to travel around and explore in your leisure time

"I learnt about the country and the people who live there. I think more so than a lot of other volunteers because I was on my own and therefore tended to mix with the locals rather than other volunteers. Living with a family also encouraged this."

A LITTLE ABOUT DIANI
Diani lies on the East coast of Kenya, about 30km south of Mombasa. It is palm-fringed with resort hotels lining the beach. With all the hotels set back from the beach and surrounded by coconuts palms, this is one of Kenya’s most popular resorts.

This is a great place if you are a nature lover as you can do glass-bottom boat tours, fishing trips and occasionally dolphin spotting. It's only about 1 hour’s drive to Kisite National Marine Park, which is one of the finest diving and snorkelling sites along the Kenya coast. Also about an hour's drive away, there is the exciting park called the Shimba Hills Game Reserve. This is the only place in Kenya where the sable antelope is found. The Reserve has many elephants, zebras and buffaloes and a weekend drive leaves you with exciting, never-to-be-forgotten memories. Within the Park you can do walking safaris to Sheldrick Falls about 5kms, another enjoyable activity.

Diani beach has fine white sands and runs along the Indian Ocean. If you like afternoon strolls along white sandy beaches, coconut palms, warm sun shining down on you and the cool ocean breeze, this is definitely the place for you.

Almost the entire coastline, from Malindi down the south coast, is protected by an off-shore reef whose clear, calm and warm waters are populated by many corals, starfish, fish, and underwater flowers – a paradise for snorkelers and divers.

The conditions are also well suited to all other forms of water sports, such as windsurfing, sailing and big-game-fishing.
