Projects in Kenya:

Alex Waterfield - April 2004

Volunteering on the marine project is, without a doubt, a unique conservation experience, particularly in comparison to any other Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) project. This is for several reasons; the first and most obvious being that it is the only non-terrestrial KWS project in the country. Because it is unique in this way, it is a law unto itself, operating under its own in-house strategies, and constantly evolving and revising its guidelines and protocol. This makes it a fascinating environment to be a part of. Because there is no definitive guiding principle for the project, everyone is free to make suggestions and pitch ideas.

The project covers the entire coast of Kenya, which means that it operates in five different parks and about as many reserves. This gives you the opportunity to work in an extremely diverse range of environments, from mangrove swamps to coral reefs, office headquarters to fisheries. Whilst being a volunteer in a terrestrial park most likely confines you to that park for the duration of your placement, being a volunteer on the marine project gives you the freedom to move about as you please. Effectively, the entire coast of Kenya is your office! Since different wardens run each of the marine parks, all of whom are eager for volunteers, you will probably find yourself extremely sought-after “hot property” and will be spoiled for choice as to where to spend your time!

Another advantage is the fact that countless other NGOs and CBOs conduct research and have projects in the marine parks, and consequently have to work under the jurisdiction of the KWS. That being the case, the headquarters in Mombasa is a hub for lively dialogue between stakeholders of the Kenyan coast. People are constantly in and out of the office, making it the ideal place for a volunteer to meet a variety of interesting individuals and groups, almost all of whom are eager to both talk and listen. Again, you are likely to be laden with invitations to visit different offices, laboratories and workshops all across the coast. Indeed, KWS encourages you to get involved with these smaller organizations where your responsibility will be substantially higher, and your contribution will be much more visible.
