If you are a Veterinary student with a love of all
animals, then this project is for you.
This project is situated
in the heart of Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe. It is perfect for
animal lovers who are looking to gain experience in the Veterinary
field. The centre is based in a unique protected area.
The wildlife centre is
located within a 70-hectare portion of
indigenous woodland in the
centre of Lilongwe. It was established in July 2007, alongside the
Department of National Parks and Wildlife the Centre’s primary remit is
to rescue, confiscate, rehabilitate and release back to the wild all the
countries wild animals. Currently the Centre has over 70 primates,
hyena, leopard and an assortment of reptiles, birds and smaller mammals.
The Centre also has a
programme whereby animals that have been traded illegally oversees can
be returned to Africa. The Centre shall not release any of the animals
back to the wild but rather provide sanctuary for life, either in open
topped electrified enclosures or within a 55 hectare wilderness areas
which will allow these victims of an international illegal trade a
chance to live out the rest of their lives in relative freedom
The Centre also has a
responsibility towards educating Malawi’s future decision makers, it
therefore takes its education objectives very seriously with a well
trained education team ready to receive the Centre’s visitors. For the
majority of Malawians living in Lilongwe this will be the only
opportunity for them to experience wild animals in a semi natural
environment, it is therefore important that the Centre takes this
opportunity and gives all our visitors a wildlife experience they will
never forget
Your work will be split
between field and in the office, it is normally about 80% in the field and 20%
in the office, but may vary depending on what is required at the time of the
placement. The veterinary volunteer will work alongside the Centre’s Operations
Manager, animal carers and local vet; your work could include the following:
Shadowing the animal carers ensuring that the animals are well looked after
on a day to day basis
Supporting the animal carers
Ensuring that all injured animals are suitably treated on advice from local
vet and Operations Manager on arrival or during their stay at the Centre
to ensure that all protocols are followed with regards to new arrivals
Overseeing any wildlife releases with regards the required veterinary work
And much more
The centre is very basic
with regards to veterinary equipment, which is adequate for all non-surgical
procedure. In the future the centre will have a Veterinary Clinic that should
hold all the modern equipment necessary for all types of veterinary work,
including operations, post mortems and x rays.
As
a volunteer you will gain the following:
Skills in working with a different culture
Learn about Malawian society and life styles of its people.
Experience
in working with a Veterinary in difficult circumstances
As
a result of your volunteer work, the Wildlife centre, the workers and the
society at large will benefit directly or indirectly as follows:
They'll have opportunities to interact with, and learn about, foreign
cultures
Have access to free work force and services.
Have
their traditional knowledge and skills of doing care work supplemented with
initiatives, skills and ideas which they will get from our volunteers.
YOUR ACCOMMODATION AND FACILITIES
Accommodation will be
provided at the adjacent lodge campsite, set alongside the Lingadzi
River and within the Brachystegia woodland of the Nature
Sanctuary. You will never know that you were in the City Centre and
would believe that you were in the middle of one of Malawi’s National
Parks. You will be provided with a tent and mattress and will be
supported through camp life by the Centre’s staff.
You will have the option
of buying, preparing and cooking your own food or chipping into the camp
budget alongside the other volunteers from the Centre. After a long
hard day at the Centre some of your best moments will be had along the
river, watching the sun set with a locally produced Green beer in hand!!
TRAVEL AND SUPPORT
You have the option to arrange your
own flights or we can assist you with your flight arrangements. If you would
like us to do this for you, we will liaise with you regarding available flights
and dates to suit you. All arrangements for your flight bookings/payments will
be fulfilled by Murray Rogers Travel Ltd., ATOL No. 6856. (Read more about Murray Rogers Travel Ltd.)
Where possible, we arrange for two or more people to travel on
the same flight and we will let you have the names and telephone numbers of
other volunteers on your flight, so that you can chat to each other or even meet
up before leaving for your placement.
Where possible, all flights we arrange for you
have changeable return tickets because many of our volunteers choose to extend
their stay once they are in their destination country. Changeable return tickets
enable you to do so, within the limits of your visa and the level of your air
ticket, of course. If you choose to book your own flights, you should endeavour
to get a changeable ticket.
We meet you at the nearest airport regardless of whether
you make your own travel arrangements or not. You will be introduced to everyone
shortly after your arrival.
We can also arrange your flight dates to give you additional time at the end of
your project for travelling around and sightseeing - this is a fascinating and
wondrous country!
VISAS:. In countries where
visas or immigration documents are required, we'll send you all the necessary
