Michael Ecclestone
Mike was one of a group of 5 volunteers who started the Football Project in Sri Lanka. (Two of the group of 5 volunteers subsequently joined Travellers as Project Co-ordinators and now arrange projects for volunteers in other destination countries. Mike subsequently came to work for Travellers and is currently Director of Operations in the UK office.)

Firstly may I thank you for enabling me to have possibly the best six months ever. Sri Lanka is a beautiful country and the people are wonderfully kind and generous. Mr Roshan was extremely helpful and kind, both during our voluntary placement and during our return from travel. He really has been outstanding even during extremely demanding times. So will you please convey my gratitude and best wishes.

One important point we realised early on was the consistency in the same coaches teaching the same children. We developed an amazing rapport with the children and it made it a joy to teach them. When we used to arrive at the school in the morning the children would literally mob us, it really was an amazing experience, so thank you very very much.

Whilst in Sri Lanka we also had just over two weeks at the Pinnawala elephant orphanage. I wish we could have had longer there as it was also absolutely amazing. The staff in the orphanage itself, the Elephant View hotel [where Travellers volunteers live during their placement] and the restaurant just inside the orphanage gates were simply the nicest people I think I'll ever meet. And made us all feel like life long friends when we went to visit.

We also had a chance to go to help at the zoo project when it was in it's infancy. although we only managed a single trip due to time constraints we managed to meet Tony the chimp, Sally the baby hippo, let a cheesy sloth bear dribble on me and I even walked a baby Jaguar cub round the zoo! So as you can probably tell I had an absolutely amazing time.

Thanks again for the experience of a life time.
Yours gratefully,
Mike.

Chris Wetter on his football coaching placement, Sri Lanka
Hi Letty, im fine. It’s good to hear from you. Im loving Ja Ela and the teaching. I haven’t really been to the orphanage a lot but I hear their improving well, I think it must have been our first lesson which really got the ball rolling. I am looking forward to going to Wasgamuwa but will be sad to leave here, I seem to get on really well with the Sri Lankans (more so than the English). I have given out all the sports equipment which was greatly appreciated.

I have been running a weekly sports club at St Josephs and have got to know the kids there really well. The grade 11's have taken me with them to elle (rounders) and cricket tournaments, quite an experience going on a public bus with a whole cricket team, great fun, they even paid for me and stopped me from falling out.
I’ve just bought them team shirts with their logo and school names printed on and I’m going to buy them some cricket equipment so they can practice. I have also donated the football kit to the Local football team and bought the team football boots. This is all with money raised by the schools in Cornwall that I worked at.
I have done so much work with these kids that it seems a shame to be leaving so soon, so I would love to stay for an extra month and come back to Ja Ela for April, I realise its the school holidays for two weeks but would be happy to run a sports club at St Joes. I would stay longer if I had the money, maybe even indefinitely!!
Well im having a great time, so thank you for all your help setting it up, its definitely an experience of a lifetime and just what I needed.
Chris
