HOLIDAY CAMP

COME TO SOUTH AFRICA AND HAVE FUN WITH THE KIDS. Turn their school holidays into an enjoyable learning experience at a fun filled camp.

THE NEED FOR A HOLIDAY CAMP
Children in South Africa have school holidays from the end of June until the middle of July. These children all come from poor rural families and they have very little in the way of resources to entertain themselves during the school holidays and due to the location of their village have nowhere to go either ...

Travellers supports this school throughout the year by placing teaching volunteers and funding classrooms, equipment etc. So we have decided to  set up a free Holiday Camp where the children can have fun together and learn at the same time.

We provide equipment and materials for games, competitions and general fun stuff and we also make sure they get a meal every day (sometimes this may be the only meal they get!).

If you've got nothing planned and you have a free couple a weeks or longer, this holiday season, why not come to South Africa and have fun under the African sun with the kids!

We have also arranged a weekend tour for you to go on a Big 5 Safari in one of South Africa's game parks. This is a really exciting opportunity to view some of Africa’s most fascinating wildlife.

Project Dates: This project runs for 2 weeks between approximately 30th of June and 11th of July and 8th to 19th December every year.

South Africa, Sun, Surf and Sea, where you can do voluntary projects in teaching, care work, work experience, conservation, sports, and much more!

TEACHING & FUN IN HOLIDAY CAMPS FOR RURAL SCHOOLS

This is a special holiday project which Travellers has set up to give the kids something to do during the holidays. The idea is to keep them entertained and perhaps teach them some skills at the same time. It will be great fun for them and won't cost their parents or grandparents a penny.  Download and print additional
 information on this project
in .pdf format
 in Word format

Our holiday camps take place at eMakhosini, a rural village school in the heart of traditional Zululand in KwaZulu Natal. During the school holidays the children have nothing at all to do due to the rural location of the school.

The children love the Holiday Camps - they're kept entertained whilst having fun and learning with the added bonus of having somewhere to go during school holidays when there's no one at home to look after them. They get a meal and win prizes! The prize for our volunteers is the big grins across all the kids' faces :-)

The cultural exchange that takes places with volunteers from a 1st world community is an amazing opportunity for them to learn about the world outside their village which most of them have never left. The opportunity to engage in conversational English opens the door to a more successful future for them, as most of them were unable to speak English until Travellers started working in the village. (Most of their parents are illiterate and do not speak any language other than Zulu and some are orphans that stay with their grandparents!) Although the emphasis of this camp is to have FUN your attendance will assist with developing life skills, numeracy, literacy and many other areas of these children’s lives.

We have a few suggestions for activities, but the list is endless.

  • Any ball games, like Football, Cricket, Rounders, Rugby or Netball
  • Dancing - The children love to dance, so putting together a dance concert or dance competition would be fun
  • Drama - Informal Drama productions is another activity that can be initiated - and all kids love play-acting!
  • Music – As the Zulu children have wonderful voices and are able to harmonise beautifully, perhaps putting a choir together to perform at the end of the holidays would be an excellent choice.
  • Magic tricks, juggling or circus-type activities
  • Simple games like hopscotch, skipping
  • Arts & Crafts - here there are many options.
  • Any creative activities, like face painting
  • Reading from story books

Or anything your imagination can dream up that will amuse the children who will be learning to use English whilst, having fun and benefiting from the activity. Their team-work skills and, social interaction will improve and their confidence will rise.

The Summer Camp will take place in the grounds of eMakhosini Primary School and will be for children from the local area who live in the village of eMakhosini itself. eMakhosini is a rural village around 19km from the town of Ulundi which was once the capital of KZN. It lies adjacent to a new game reserve called the eMakhosini Ophathe Heritage Park and your accommodation is actually inside the Park. The area is also very rich in history – see additional information on the area.

You may work for only a few hours a day, or you may find that you want to devote more time to the children. A typical working day will be from 8 - 1 but you may wish to stay for longer as will the kids!  We have organised for you to work with children aged between 9 - 10 years old who are in Grade 5. You may find that some of the children in this grade are slightly younger or older as the age at which children have the opportunity to go to school varies.

During the holiday camp you will have some members of staff present, but you and will have the opportunity to become quite involved in the structure, running and development of the camp. This will require you to work on your own initiative for a lot of the time. For this reason, being creative is a must. Having a member of staff on hand will help you with the language barrier and any other cultural problems you may encounter.

You will be working with a group of 20 children for each volunteer and you need to be diverse and organised. You are encouraged to utilise any skills or passions you have, whether these are playing sport, music, drama or just games.

You will enjoy making a real difference by introducing a fun and creative way for the children to express themselves and learn many new things. You’ll be rewarded by how much fun the children will have!

Weekend Trips
As you will be on location over the weekend and this counts as free time, we have arranged a trip for you to explore the area.

Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve: This world famous game reserve is home to the White Rhino which was saved from extinction right here approximately 50km away from your project. You will be taken on a full day trip into the reserve for game viewing and as the Park is home to the Big 5 - Lion, Elephant, Buffalo, Rhino and Leopard – make sure you have your camera and binoculars with you!

So if you haven't got anything planned and you're free for a couple a weeks or longer this summer, why not come to South Africa and have fun with the kids.

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation is situated on one of the farms incorporated into the eMakhosini Opathe Heritage Park game reserve. The farm is approximately 20 km from Ulundi town and shopping trips into town will be arranged at a set time on a weekly basis.

Currently accommodation is in the old farm house which has 2 bathrooms, 6 bedrooms which can sleep 4 people each, a large kitchen and social area with a fireplace. Although the garden is fenced and gated you will often find game from the Park roaming around the house. These include kudu, zebra, giraffe and even rhino’s! The reserves game guards live in accommodation within walking distance from the house, so also expect to see game guards on patrol.

The eMakhosini village and school where you will be working is across the road from the farm at approximately a 2 km walk. You will be expected to walk to school, (most of the children walk 10km to get to the school). Renovations to the old farmhouse and construction of additional accommodation will start early in 2007 as the farm will become the main research and education centre for the Park.

The house is equipped with a television and DVD player. Volunteers are advised to bring DVDs, books and games for the evening as you are some distance from any social amenities.

You'll be given a budget for food which will cover all your meals. All you will need is pocket money for extras, such as Cokes, shampoo, travelling around, etc. The water at the house is pumped from a borehole and is completely safe to drink but hard and may taste different to what you are use to. You may therefore prefer to buy your own bottled water.

TRAVEL:
You have the option to arrange your own flights or we can assist you with your flight arrangements. If you would like us to do this for you, we will liaise with you regarding available flights and dates to suit you. All arrangements for your flight bookings/payments will be fulfilled by Murray Rogers Travel Ltd., ATOL No. 6856. (Read more about Murray Rogers Travel Ltd.) Where possible, we arrange for two or more people to travel on the same flight and we will let you have the names and telephone numbers of other volunteers on your flight, so that you can chat to each other or even meet up before leaving for your placement.
We can also arrange your flight dates to give you additional time at the end of your project for travelling around and sightseeing - this is a fascinating and wondrous country!
Where possible, all flights we arrange for you have changeable return tickets because many of our volunteers choose to extend their stay once they are in their destination country. Changeable return tickets enable you to do so, within the limits of your visa and the level of your air ticket, of course.

If you choose to book your own flights, you should endeavour to get a changeable ticket. We meet you at the airport regardless of whether you make your own travel arrangements or not.

To read about the extensive Support & Backup we provide in our countries, please click here.

VISAS:. In countries where visas or immigration documents are required, we'll send you all the necessary forms and information and make the process very easy for you.

You'll fly into Johannesburg Airport where you'll change to a domestic flight to Durban. Johannesburg is a very modern and interesting airport with an exciting African feel about it. It is possibly one of the nicest in the world - and a favourite with the Travellers team.

At your destination, you will be met and taken to your placement and accommodation. There you'll be introduced to everyone,  given an orientation and an introduction to the animals.
