Work in the tourism industry in
the Tsitsikamma National Park.
This is a rare opportunity to gain work experience in a Nature Reserve.
Tsitsikamma is a very
popular holiday destination for South Africans, as well as visitors from all over the world.
It's reputation is superb and the setting is absolutely beautiful. Visitors to Tsitsikamma Park are accommodated in log cabins and in well-kept camp sites,
most with ocean views.
Our tourism placements in the
Tsitsikamma Nature Reserve are for
volunteers who are studying or working in the Tourism sector. The programme
is structured and tailored to your requirements, and we will discuss these in
detail with you.
This is a rare opportunity to learn about
all aspects of running a Nature Reserve - a unique environment - and at the same
time observing how tourism is managed and marketed in South Africa.
The photo on the right is taken from the main
Tourist Building. Inside there are restaurants, shops, a supermarket,
reservations desk, information desks, and many, many other facilities.
Your work will include helping in many different areas within the complex.
The many facilities and activities include
hiking, boating, sailing, scuba diving, and lots of other outdoor walks
and pursuits. One of the attractions is the raft tethered in the middle
of the river that you can swim to and sunbathe on. Days are ended with
barbecues under the stars or in the indoor/outdoor restaurant in the
main complex.
This
placement is very much customised around your requirements and preferences. When
you arrive, the Tourism Manager will sit down with you and discuss what
particular areas you want to gain most experience in and what you hope to gain
out of the programme as a whole. Then he'll tailor your work
accordingly. Areas where you'll work may include:
Reception
Marketing
Maintenance and Room Service
Restaurant and catering
Customer relations
Park activities.
To do this placement you should be studying (or
have studied) a tourism related course. If your course specialises in adventure
tourism, we can arrange for you to participate in activities such as boating,
sailing, hiking, abseiling, etc.
You'll probably also spend at least one week in Nature's
Valley, where you'll have lots of peace and quiet and will participate in
rambling walks and hiking ventures. This is a very good area for whale and
dolphin spotting as well.
You'll stay in a house inside the Park, close to
the main entrance. The house is set among trees and you'll share with other volunteers and eat your
evening meal in the large, airy restaurant which overlooks the ocean. On warm
evenings you can eat outside on the balcony under the stars.
Breakfast
is make-your-own in the kitchen facilities in the house, because you will start
work at 7.00 in the morning and won't have time to go to the restaurant! Lunch
will be sandwiches which you take with you to be eaten wherever you happen to be
that day - this could be on the river or even on a hike!
You'll also be provided with uniforms to suit the work
you're doing.

TRAVEL:
With a little bit extra!
You have the option to
arrange your own flights or we can assist you with your flight arrangements. If
you would like us to do this for you, we will liaise with you regarding
available flights and dates to suit you. All arrangements for your flight
bookings/payments will be fulfilled by Murray Rogers Travel Ltd., ATOL No. 6856. (Read more about Murray Rogers Travel Ltd.)
Where possible, we arrange for two or more
people to travel on the same flight and we will let you have the names and
telephone numbers of other volunteers on your flight, so that you can chat to
each other or even meet up before leaving for your placement.
Where
possible, all flights we arrange for you have changeable return tickets because
many of our volunteers choose to extend their stay once they are in their
destination country. Changeable return tickets enable you to do so, within the
limits of your visa and the level of your air ticket, of course. If you choose
to book your own flights, you should endeavour to get a changeable ticket. We
meet you at the airport regardless of whether you make your own travel
arrangements or not.
If your
placement is in the Cape, you'll be met in Johannesburg by our representative
who will transfer you to your flight to George, but ...... if you're lucky and have time
between flights, she may take you on a whistle-stop tour of Johannesburg! In
George you'll be met at the airport by Bill Fussell, our SA Manager.
VISAS:. In countries where visas or
immigration documents are required, we'll send you all the necessary forms and
information and make the process very easy for you.
We can also arrange your flight dates to give you
additional time at the end of your project for travelling around and sightseeing
- this is a fascinating and wondrous country!
