TRAVELLERS' TALES: SPORTS WORK EXPERIENCE - SOUTH AFRICA
.

Michael Dakin / Sports Work Experience Internship - South Africa / British
Just a quick message to say I have been back in the UK for a couple of weeks now and am missing South Africa already. The placement, people and whole experience was fantastic. I'd like to thank you personally for making this happen for me, an experience I'll never forget. I wouldn't change anything about the placement - it was probably the best decision I've made to go out there. So thanks again for all your help, and hope things continue to go well for you!

What experience do you feel you are gaining? Great coaching experience, as well as seeing how the administration is run behind the scenes. Excellent for what I needed to do, a good mix of office work, ground maintenance and coaching.

What is the best thing about your placement so far? Meeting all the different children, visiting the different schools whilst coaching.

Would you recommend this placement to anyone else?
Yes, great for any sport enthusiasts.

What type of person do you think this placement would suit? People highly interested in sport, who are willing to share ideas as to how the sport school can improve what it offers, and people who are interested in seeing how sport is run and managed.

Can you describe a typical day? Start time about 9.30. Meeting with rest of Sport School workers about upcoming work. Morning work would include some ground maintenance work e.g. marking pitches followed by working in office organising coaching/tournaments upcoming. Afternoon spent coaching until approximately 4 O'clock. Back to sport school to drop stuff off and be leaving office by 5. Days varied highly though, some days longer some days shorter.

By the way, keep my details because I will certainly be going again. BEST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE!!!!

Harry Bryson / Sports Work Experience Internship - South Africa / British

I am gaining experience in how to communicate with all different ages of children and how to over come barriers such as different languages!! The best thing so far is working with the children in the outreach projects and seeing the benefits we have in their sporting lives, also the friendliness of the staff at the school has been fantastic and made me feel like I was a part of the school. It has been a fantastic experience, I would definitely recommend this placement. It would suit anyone who wants to teach sport and who is passionate about sport.

Can you describe a typical day? I started at 7:15 due to me working with a cricketer and devising him a fitness plan, finished at 5 maybe 6 dependant on whether we were required to umpire cricket matches, lunch is varied but always a good half hour break. Morning duties are working with the outreach schools and afternoon duties are based around working with all the children.
