After the first week: I have
completed my first week at Arthur Quinton Architects and I have settled in
quickly and I am currently enjoying my experience so far.
On my first day I waken onto site and
shown a half-built house which I have [subsequently] contributed various
drawings towards. I have drawn a number of sketches and perspectives of
interior layouts, for example, kitchen and bedrooms - also designing an
entertainment unit and braai [barbecue] area.My local Manager, Roger King, has been
very helpful with regard to helping me settle and he is also arranging any
'out of work' activities that I wish to do (e.g. a climb up Table Mountain
is hopefully being organised).
Half-way through: I am enjoining my
job at the halfway stage of my work placement. Every time a member of
staff has to visit a site, I am asked to accompany them so I can gain
first-hand experience of the building construction process. I have seen
various stages of a project and the difficulties which the architect
encounters on site.I was also asked to sit in a meeting with
a client and show my proposed ideas for a kitchen, and also my joinery
sketches. This was the first time I have ever had the opportunity to sit
in a meeting and talk to a client - and to receive feedback.
Outside of work I have joined a gym/sports
club which is directly opposite our office. On weekends I have been
socialising with my workmates and I have plans to go surfing, too.Overall, I am really enjoying my stay in
Cape Town.
At the end of Thomas' placement, he
sent us a lovely thank-you letter:I am writing to thank you for organising
and arranging my recent work-placement in South Africa that I completed at
Arthur Quinton Architects.
I had a great time working there and I met
some really nice people who I will probably meet again sometime. I also
had a fantastic time when I travelled out of Cape Town for a short while.I would like to thank Roger King [Travellers
Cape Town Manager] in particular who made my trip possible by helping
me settle at the start and ensuring everything ran smoothly throughout.
Thanks again for giving me such a great
experience which has helped me with my career decisions and given me some
vital knowledge.Kind Regards
Thomas Wilson
