Knysna is a resort town on the Garden Route, very popular with South African and international tourists because of it's outstanding beauty.

Knysna was recently been awarded a permanent (low powered transmitter) Commercial Sound Broadcasting License, to operate a Radio Station. The journey to achieve this took four years, but now, having received it, the town is ecstatic!

The Station broadcasts 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is Commercial Station, but one that is here to entertain and inform the Knysna population. The format of the Station is 80% music and 20% talk, with the language being mainly English, but a fair sprinkling of Afrikaans.

The Station features live presenters from 6:00am until 9:00pm but plans are to extend this to midnight.

WORK CONTENT:
The Presenters are a mixture of ages from 20 years upwards, and come from all parts of the town.

You'll be supervised by the Station Manager (who is also the Sales & Marketing Manager). He has 20 years' experience with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), thus the knowledge you'll gain under his supervision will be enormous!

The different areas you'll work in include:

  • Advertising,

  • Sound production,

  • On-air, and

  • Voice-overs (if you have a good voice)

  • Also accompanying your Supervisor in meetings with clients on occasions

  • You'll also receive training on the software and equipment that is used.

The music policy of the Station is a mixture of easy to listen to music, mainly chosen from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, but with a “Playlist” of recent hits and music from South African artists and groups.

They also do sports commentary and once a week on a Friday night host the “Rock ‘n Roll Psycho Circus” rock show with Mad Brad and Kim. This is a pre-recorded podcast that goes out on the internet, too. You may also have the opportunity to sit in on the making and uploading of this show at their studio.

HOURS OF WORK:

Five days a week, Monday to Friday, with an occasional Saturday morning. The hours are generally 8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. with breaks.

ACCOMMODATION AND TRAVEL

Volunteer house in Knysna

Knysna: For this project you will live in our volunteer house with other Travellers volunteers. You may either have your own room or will share a room with one or more other Travellers volunteers. It will depend on how many people are there at the same time that you are. This is a comfortable house with good facilities and a beautiful view of Knysna Lagoon. You will be provided with a food budget, so that you can buy your own groceries and cook and prepare your own meals at the house, this makes for a great social event.

When accommodation is limited, we occasionally place volunteers in a local Guest House which is very comfortable and convenient for access into town. Please note that occasionally the house that we use may change owing to availability.

There are several good, inexpensive steak houses and lots of good Chinese, Italian and other ethnic restaurants all over South Africa. Seafood, of course, is often fresh and plentiful.

On Arrival, your Introduction to the Country:
When you arrive you will be welcomed by a member of our South African staff who will take you to your accommodation and introduce you to everyone. During your first few days you'll be given an induction so that you can learn about the country and its culture, as well as other useful information, like how to use the transport system, banks, safety issues, tipping, and lots more.

"The area is beautiful and travelling is easy. The house we stay in is lovely and the Travellers workers are such kind, loving people which really makes it feel like a home away from home. What with all the other volunteers and the Travellers staff, it really does feel like our own little family ... well, our own very big family, I suppose!!!!" Luke Brennan

Be inspired by one volunteers story of her time in South Africa and the subsequent links she developed when she was back home. Sarah Cowan's heart warming story
