This is a unique opportunity to live and work with a real South African
Adventure Safari company in Cape Town! The placement is based between the
Atlantic ocean and False Bay coast on the stunning Cape Peninsula.
Observe, learn and experience! Be an active part of all aspects involved in
Adventure Tourism, from marketing and bookings to hospitality,
entertaining guests and guiding. And then, once you've learnt all the
basics, you'll end your placement assisting the guides on an exciting and
action-packed Adventure Tour.
For example, the 7-day Adventure Tour takes
in the Eastern and Western Cape, starting from Cape Town and going up
the coast as far as Addo Elephant National
Park. On this particular tour you'll assist the guides and learn what
it's really like to manager and cater to groups of tourists on an
adventure safari. Along the way you'll experience
Game driving, whale watching, ski-boat cruises, elephant riding, cheetah
petting and much, much MORE! It's likely that some of the tourists will
also take part in bungee jumping and caving, which you won't be required
to do, but you can if you choose to.
There are different tours
included in the placement, depending on the length of the project you
choose.
2-Week Adventure Tourism Work Experience Project – includes
the 5-Day Tour
4-Week Adventure Tourism Work Experience Project – includes
the 7-Day Tour
8-Week and 12-Week Adventure Tourism Work Experience Projects –
include both the 5-day and 7-Day Tours
No experience is necessary to do this Project, just a relaxed,
easygoing personality and the ability to socialise and interact with
tourists and visitors.
"After one week back home, I have still all
these pictures of our Cape to Garden Route tour in my mind! Whenever I
feel stressed now, I just close my eyes and see those graceful dolphins
again, coming so close to our boat at Cape Agulhas.
For me, the tour was something like the perfect mix of laid-back
travelling in stunning landscapes and accommodations at some of the most
beautiful places I have ever seen. I really enjoyed sitting around the
fireplace at night with a few beers, just chatting about the next day,
the world, or life in general.
Thank you!"
About Your Activities on this
Adventure Tourism Work Experience Placement:
This is not your average work experience placement! Every day is
different and because the main clientele are folk much like you, the
general atmosphere is relaxed and quite laid back.
The aim of this work experience opportunity is to give you a
comprehensive firsthand experience of the daily running,
marketing, organising and planning of a true South African adventure
tourism business.
Marketing:
You will be involved in the ongoing visiting and servicing of agents and
backpackers throughout Cape Town and Stellenbosch, you might also be
asked to assist in the distribution of flyers in local universities.
Internet marketing is also an ongoing process and you may help here as
well. Any recommendations and ideas you may have are hugely valued and
most welcome.
Bookings:
You will be involved in the process of administrating, servicing and
answering enquiries, buying of food stock, right through to the final
invoicing, booking and arranging of times and places of departure in
Cape Town, should you have foreign language skills these will also be of
great value here…
Hospitality:
As you will be staying in backpacker style accommodation, you will also
have the opportunity to learn the basics of how such an establishment is
run, from laundry, to expenses management, house maintenance, guest
liaison, purchasing of stock etc…
Vehicle Maintenance:
Yes, you may be asked to help clean a tour vehicle or two... but it’s a
lot more fun than you think! Please bear in mind that there is no
typical day as such. African time works a lot differently than anywhere
else in the world and we like to enjoy and appreciate each passing
moment. Operating an adventure tourism company in Cape Town is more a
lifestyle than a job.
There are no set hours of work but when there is work to be done
everyone jumps in head and feet first. Marketing the tours is an ongoing
process as is administration and preparing each vehicle for departure
every Sunday.
There will also be plenty of time to relax, whether it’s on the beach,
climbing a mountain, banging around the house or taking a camping trip
up the west coast (the owner of the company is an avid surfer).
There is always something to keep you excited and busy!
About The Adventure Tourism Company:
The company has been operating since 2006. The owner has 14 years
experience in the tourism industry. He has led 34 one-month camping safaris from
Cape Town to Victoria Falls as well as 18 into the Kalahari. He is also founder
of an organisation called the African Knights Children’s Safari Project which
takes
groups of 20 children at a time, and their care workers, from children’s homes in and around
Cape Town on camping trips into the nearby wilderness.
The Project does this for free in an effort to show these disadvantaged
children sights they've never been able to see and to give them
experiences that help them to strive for more opportunities. Some of the
proceeds from your
placement will go towards funding for this project.
Tours
depart every Sunday from Cape Town and offer a truly unique South
African experience. Due to niche marketing, low pricing and exciting
itineraries the tours have become increasingly popular among students,
backpackers and other budget conscious travellers.
The route
followed is through the malaria-free Western and Eastern Cape
exploring the famous Whale Route, the R62 wine route, the southernmost
tip of Africa at Cape Agulhas, the beautiful Garden Route, the surfing
Mecca of Jeffreys Bay, and all the way up the East Coast to the
ever-popular Addo Elephant National Park for some BIG 5 game viewing!
The
itineraries are packed with unique experiences and exciting discoveries
like game driving, whale watching ski-boat cruises, caving, beer & wine
tasting, tree-top ‘zip-lining’, hot springs, horse riding, walking with
elephants, river and sea kayaking, bungi-jumping, cheetah petting, the
list goes on… and on!
The
owners and guides are all extremely well experienced in the field and
offer a brilliant knowledge base to learn from.
Guests are transported in comfortable 12-seater buses with
air-conditioning, CD/MP3 player, reclining seats, large viewing windows,
ample storage space and even a fridge for drinks and fruit etc!
For me, the tour was something like the perfect mix of laid-back
travelling in stunning landscapes, adventurous game drives and
accommodations at some of the most beautiful places I have ever seen in
my life. I really enjoyed sitting around the fireplace at night with a
few beers, just chatting about the next day, the world, or life in
general. Thank you!"
(Jens Plath)
"This tour was just super, the best tour I've
had, the best accommodation, attractive places, awesome ocean views,
beaches and wild animals, delicious food and Oh! So romantic with
beautiful scenery. Thank you, you're the best!"
(Innocent Tomeo)"
Accommodation and Living in Cape Town:
Your accommodation will
be in the tour operator house in Capri Village, with stunning panoramic views of
the beaches, mountains and forests!
This exotic part of Cape Town is home to surfer’s, horse farms and pretty
bohemian kind of lifestyles.
You will stay in a shared dorm room and you have the use of a bathroom, a
kitchen, lounge area, and courtyard braai area. The house is situated within
close to town, but you will more than often be driven in to do your shopping,
watching movies at the cinema etc.
Internet is available at the house for free. There are also two internet
cafes in the town.
Food is not provided on this project, but when on tour you will receive all
meals that are provided to other guests at no cost.
Travel:
You have the option to arrange your
own flights or we can assist you with your flight arrangements. If you would
like us to do this for you, we will liaise with you regarding available flights
and dates to suit you. All arrangements for your flight bookings/payments will
be fulfilled for you by Murray Rogers Travel Ltd., ATOL No. 6856. (Read
more about Murray Rogers Travel Ltd.) Where possible, we arrange for two or
more people to travel on the same flight and we will let you have the names and
telephone numbers of other volunteers on your flight, so that you can chat to
each other or even meet up before leaving for your placement.
We can also arrange your flight dates to give you additional time at the
end of your project for travelling around and sightseeing - this is a
fascinating and wondrous country!
Where possible, all flights we arrange for you have changeable return tickets
because many of our volunteers choose to extend their stay once they are in
their destination country. Changeable return tickets enable you to do so, within
the limits of your visa and the level of your air ticket, of course.
If you choose to book your own flights, you should endeavor to get a changeable
ticket. We meet you at the airport regardless of whether you make your own
travel arrangements or not.
You will usually fly into Cape Town, where you will be welcomed by a Travellers
representative. He will welcome you, introduce you to everyone and see that
you're settled in. From there you'll be taken to Gaansbaai, where the project takes
place.
VISAS:. In countries where
visas or immigration documents are required, we'll send you all the necessary
forms and information and make the process very easy for you.
