As part of the course you will also get the chance to have a day surfing on a dam which has still water. This is a great way for beginners to start to learn to balance and the basics of surfing.

As part of the course there will be theoretical lessons as well as practical which will assist you in your learning. The course will also cover an explanation of how a surfboard is made as well as a practical demonstration by a local surfboard shaper. As part of the course all surfboards, bodyboards, wetsuits, leashes and rash vests will be provided by the school. Inbetween surfing lessons you will have the opportunity to practice your surfing with your own board at the beach just 50 meters from your accommodation.

Whatever your standard, the course will be able to cater for you. If you are a total beginner then the instructors will start with the basics and work their way up or if you are an experienced surfer then the course will cater for you as well. The course is also flexible as to your needs, as everyone progresses at different speeds, so whatever your standard and speed of development, the surfing instructors will be able to cater for you requirements and give you the necessary one on one instruction.

This project is available all year round due to the good weather in Durban. The water stays warm throughout the year.

"The guys who run the surf course are really friendly and welcoming, when I arrived at the surfing headquarters I was amazed by the location it is absolutely beautiful and looking over the beach. To get down to the beach which is a private beach all we had to do was simply open their back gate and we were right on the beach which is stunning. For those who are wishing to learn how to surf in a beautiful surfing environment with professional instruction then this is the course for you. The course is well structured because it adds practical with theoretical sessions as well as plenty of practice time after the lessons and living in a backpackers 50 meters from the beach is great because there is easy access to the beach as well as a good social life." Richard Cowley

Travel, Visas and Support & Backup:
This information on Travel and Visas is for those who would like to do this Surfing course but who are not doing another placement with us.

You have the option to arrange your own flights or we can assist you with your flight arrangements. If you would like us to do this for you, we will liaise with you regarding available flights and dates to suit you. All arrangements for your flight bookings/payments will be fulfilled by Murray Rogers Travel Ltd., ATOL No. 6856. (Read more about Murray Rogers Travel Ltd.)

Where possible, we arrange for two or more people to travel on the same flight and we will let you have the names and telephone numbers of other volunteers on your flight, so that you can chat to each other or even meet up before leaving for your placement.

We can also arrange your flight dates to give you additional time at the end of your project for travelling around and sightseeing - this is a fascinating and wondrous country!

Where possible, all flights we arrange for you have changeable return tickets because many of our volunteers choose to extend their stay once they are in their destination country. Changeable return tickets enable you to do so, within the limits of your visa and the level of your air ticket, of course. If you choose to book your own flights, you should endeavour to get a changeable ticket. We meet you at the airport regardless of whether you make your own travel arrangements or not.

You'll fly into the Airport in Johannesburg and then fly to Durban or catch the Baz Bus down to Durban which will give you the opportunity to see beautiful South  Africa.

When you arrive, you'll be met by your surfing instructor who will take you straight to your accommodation and the base for your surf lessons and introduce you to everyone.

VISAS:. In countries where visas or immigration documents are required, we'll send you all the necessary forms and information and make the process very easy for you.
