OPTIONAL ADD-ON: SURFING COURSES IN DURBAN

LEARN TO SURF IN DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA. This is an exciting and fun project where you'll learn one-on-one with top instructors, on great waves in the warm Indian Ocean of Durban.

If you love the outdoors and an adrenalin pumped lifestyle, you'll enjoy this course! You'll have daily surf lessons as well as having plenty of personal practice time. Your accommodation will be situated in a lively and surf orientated backpackers right next to the beach.

COURSE OVERVIEW
The course is based in the lively city of Durban which is renowned for its surfing, golden beaches, big waves and great nightlife. Durban is known as one of the elite surfing venues in the world and hosts a number of international surfing events each year and has produced many top surfers over the years. The surfing course will take place in the suburbs of Durban right next to the beach and a short drive to the lively nightlife of Durban city centre.

WHO CAN DO THIS COURSE?

  • This course is open to all Travellers volunteers and can be completed before, during or after your placement.

  • Non-Travellers volunteers are also welcome to participate in this course.

PRICES:

  • £475 for all Travellers volunteers doing a placement with us

  • £795 for Non-Travellers volunteers.

The course provides one on one professional surfing instruction from top local instructors. You will have 2 hour lessons daily from Monday - Friday where you will be visiting a variety of beaches to learn in a number of different surfing environments. You will also be using a variety of boards to find out which one you are most suited to, which will give you an overall insight into surfing.

As part of the course you will also get the chance to have a day surfing on a dam which has still water. This is a great way for beginners to start to learn to balance and the basics of surfing.

As part of the course there will be theoretical lessons as well as practical which will assist you in your learning. The course will also cover an explanation of how a surfboard is made as well as a practical demonstration by a local surfboard shaper. As part of the course all surfboards, bodyboards, wetsuits, leashes and rash vests will be provided by the school. Inbetween surfing lessons you will have the opportunity to practice your surfing with your own board at the beach just 50 meters from your accommodation.

Whatever your standard, the course will be able to cater for you. If you are a total beginner then the instructors will start with the basics and work their way up or if you are an experienced surfer then the course will cater for you as well. The course is also flexible as to your needs, as everyone progresses at different speeds, so whatever your standard and speed of development, the surfing instructors will be able to cater for you requirements and give you the necessary one on one instruction.

This project is available all year round although it is very much influenced by the weather and also the annual sardine run.

SARDINE RUN
This amazing phenomenon takes place from late May to mid July when the sardines make their way along the coastline from the Eastern Cape to the north coast. Surfing lessons will be disrupted when the sardines, along with their predators, arrive on the KZN coastline between mid June to mid July. As it is essential that the predators, including sharks, are not harmed in any way, the shark nets along the coastline are lifted thereby making ventures into the ocean a risk factor.

As is the norm with Nature, there are no hard and fast rules. We cannot give the exact dates for this remarkable occurrence and if your dates should coincide with the Sardine Run, the surf school will endeavour to continue with some lessons on a still water dam and the indoor wave centre. You will also have the opportunity to do some rock pool snorkelling and go for a coastal drive where you will experience some incredible sights of the birds and predators diving for the sardines.

"The guys who run the surf course are really friendly and welcoming, when I arrived at the surfing headquarters I was amazed by the location it is absolutely beautiful and looking over the beach. To get down to the beach which is a private beach all we had to do was simply open their back gate and we were right on the beach which is stunning.

If you want to learn to surf in a beautiful environment with professional instruction, this is the course for you. The course is well structured and adds practical with theoretical sessions as well as plenty of practice time after the lessons. Living in a backpackers 50 meters from the beach is great because there is easy access to the beach as well as a good social life." Richard Cowley
