TRAVELLERS HAS MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE TO THE CHILDREN IN THE TOWNSHIPS.

Our volunteers' work with the children, together with the financial donations made by Travellers, has meant that the practical achievements in the schools and the impact on the children has been immense.

  • The children's knowledge has improved,

  • Their self-confidence has grown sky-high

  • Their facilities have improved

  • The money donated by Travellers enables the school to pay for more teachers

"The volunteers touch so many lives in so many wonderful ways and seeing it first hand is the most satisfying thing I can imagine. I grew up here and worked closely with township schools - there used to be a lack of productivity and enjoyment in these institutions that previously had very little to offer. They were short-staffed and with very few resources, and it was virtually impossible to promote any passion about learning in the students. The schools  were simply just places that were obligatory to go to as youngsters.

But now, since the inception of Travellers' volunteers over the past years, there has been a noticeable change in both the attitude of the learners and the staff in the schools. New ideas, fresh energy and the mixing of interesting cultures have made such a positive impact on everyone involved.

The level of English has improved tremendously owing to the learners desperately trying to communicate with the Volunteers. The teachers experience interesting techniques and fun ways to teach - and the volunteers themselves end up growing in so many different ways.

To me, the tears shed by children and volunteers at the end of a placement are more than sadness. They are a symbol of confirmation of an incredible symbiosis, one that we hope to provide and strengthen more and more every day.
" Jim Morel, Assistant Manager, South Africa.

CHRISTMAS PARTY AT SOUP KITCHEN HELD BY TRAVELLERS VOLUNTEERS!
Travellers Volunteers have also been working at a local Soup Kitchen where they work after school, helping to run reading classes, assist at the creche and play with the children. This year, Travellers volunteers arranged a Christmas Party at the Soup Kitchen.

Report by Travellers Volunteer Liaison Officer, Heather Johnston:~
The volunteers all clubbed together to buy cakes, jelly, party blowers & a pass the parcel present.  They hired a Father Christmas suit and set off to the Soup Kitchen to throw the kids a Christmas Party.

The kids queued in height order and waited for the ‘special visitor’ to arrive.  Peter Smith bravely dressed in the woollen Santa suit in the roasting 25°C heat and emerged from the house baring gifts of sweets & small toys.  A few of the older kids were a little dubious as to the identity of Santa, but kept quiet in front of the smaller children!

After all the sweets were finished and the E numbers had taken their full effect, it was time for pass the parcel. Marina Niel had painstakingly wrapped the parcel in enough paper for each kid to get a shot at opening it, but chaos ruled as per normal and the parcel was handed around all over the place.  But the kids had a lot of fun and a winner walked away with a Finding Nemo puzzle.

Two big bags of gifts had been donated by a local woman.  The volunteers and Santa helped hand the presents out and spent the next hour checking the new toys out with the kids showing them how to use them.  There were dolls, teddies, cars, jewellery kits, model planes and many more.

Once the toys had been opened and played with, it was time to top the sugar levels up with jelly & cup cakes.  The kids couldn’t believe there were more treats.  They ran riot with the party blowers, it sounded like a flock of screeching birds had descended on the area.

Before leaving, all the rubbish was cleared away, the washing up was done & the new toys tucked under arms to take home.  Santa climbed onto his sleigh (well...into the Kombi) and was waved goodbye by a lot of very happy kids.

It was a good day for both the kids and the volunteers.

TRAVELLERS AND VOLUNTEERS ALIKE HAVE SHOWN THAT HERE
EVERY CHILD REALLY IS SPECIAL !
