PROJECT OVERVIEW
You'll work in a private English-Medium school in Trivandrum, the capital city of Kerala, in the south of India. The school is a minority education institute with an excellent reputation. You can teach a range of subjects, including:

  • English

  • Sports

  • Computer Science

  • Music

  • Art

On arrival, you'll be introduced to the Principal and staff on your first day and they will discuss your teaching programme with you.  It's a mixed school with around 600 children, all of whom will be waiting to meet you with wide smiles!

The ages of the children range from 3 to 18. The facilities at the school are very good and the staff is very keen to have foreign volunteers because the children benefit enormously in many different ways to the exposure to people from different cultures. Not only will you be giving invaluable teaching and education to the school, your involvement with the children will bring immense satisfaction and enjoyment!

You don't need any qualifications to participate on this project, but you should have a good knowledge of the subject (or subjects) you'd like to teach. If you haven't taught before, a great way to become more confident in the classroom is to take part in a weekend TEFL course. Not only will this help you with how to go about lesson planning, it will also give you an introduction about teaching abroad as well as ways to get the children inspired and eager to learn!

You will be reminded of fantastic children’s games, tips on how to remember everyone’s names as well as an opportunity to look through all the latest teaching books. Even if you have had experience in a classroom before, it’s always reassuring to take part in one of our courses to help you prepare for teaching overseas.

We also give you a Teaching Suggestions Guide which we have prepared in-house to give you lots of ideas.

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS IN KERALA (APPROX):

  • First Term Vacation: 24th September to 3rd October 2011

  • Pooja Holiday: 5th to 7th October 2011

  • Diwali Holiday: 25th to 27th October 2011

  • Second Term Vacation: 23rd December 2011 to 2nd January 2012

  • Summer Vacation: 31st March to 2nd May 2012

EXAM PERIODS (APPROX):

  • Quarterly Exams: 22nd to 30th August 2011

  • Half Yearly Exams: 12th to 22nd December 2011

  • Annual Exams: 2nd to 31st March 2012

WHAT YOU'LL GAIN FROM DOING THIS PROJECT:

  • An exciting, never-to-be-forgotten adventure into beautiful India and it's fascinating culture.

  • The enormous satisfaction of helping disadvantaged children and knowing that you made a difference to them.

  • New skills, more confidence, a greater understanding of a different culture, invaluable personal and professional development.

  • An entry on your CV or résumé that will put you head and shoulders above most others in the job market

  • And best of all ... an unforgettable experience!

TEACHING OTHER SUBJECTS:
If you have some know-how, some initiative and lots of enthusiasm, you can also get involved with teaching Art and or Music.

Teaching Art is an excellent way of engaging children’s imaginations and encourages them to communicate with few constraints. What’s more, it is very satisfying to watch their confidence grow as they learn and develop new skills.

The school are also keen on volunteers wishing to teach music.  The school has its own band troupe that performs on occasions such as Annual Day, Sports Day, Cultural festivals and youth festivals, so if you have an interest in teaching anything from the recorder to trumpet we will try our best to accommodate you!

All the children at the school are expected to take part in physical education classes and sports so you may also have the opportunity to teach some of the following sports:

  • Basketball

  • Cricket

  • Football

  • Table Tennis

  • Hockey

The school have regular competitions in sport that are in-house and they also compete against other schools and at district level, so you may be able to add your input and help coach the children to competition level!

ACCOMMODATION AND TRAVEL

You'll either live with a host family or in an apartment. In either accommodation you may share a room with another Travellers volunteer. The accommodation you’ll be allocated to will depend on which project you’re doing and the number of volunteers there at the same time as you. However, if you have a preference for either a host family or staying in an apartment, we will do our best to accommodate you.

Host Family
For a complete Indian experience we can arrange for you to stay with one of our lovely host families. Our hosts are very welcoming and not only will be made to feel part of the family you’ll also gain a great insight into Indian culture and customs. Many of our volunteers remain friends with their host families long after they leave India and in some cases they return to the country later especially to visit their family.

Food: Breakfast and dinner will be provided and prepared for you by the family and  is mainly local fare allowing you to taste a varied selection of delicious south Indian dishes and exotic fruits. You will need to make provision for your own lunch.

Apartment Living
Apartments are very comfortable and give you the opportunity to be totally independent yet still live within the local community. The apartments are modern, spacious, light and airy with kitted out kitchens and lounge areas.

Food is not included in the placement if you're staying in an apartment, so you'll need to budget for your meals. This option gives you the choice to either cook for yourself or make the most of the opportunity to sample the fantastic local cafes and restaurants - Remember, Trivandrum food is known as God's own food in God's own country!

Eating out is cheap in India. You’ll be able to sample excellent south Indian Thali’s and Dosa’s. A staple of Keralan cuisine is coconut so do not miss the wonderful Keralan curries.  Rice is also served with most dishes and being on the coast you will get fresh sea food.  Vegetarians are very well catered for and the markets stocked with an array of delicious fruit and vegetables.
