COME to
India AND HAVE FUN WITH THE KIDS. Transform their school holidays into
an enjoyable learning experience at Summer Camp.
Children
in India have school holidays from roughly the beginning of April until
the start of June. Unfortunately, many of the children come from poor
families and have no way to entertain
themselves during the Summer holiday ... that's why we've started this
summer camp project so that you can go out to South India and help entertain
the kids!
The children love the Summer Camps - they're kept entertained and
have somewhere to go during school holidays when there's no one around to look
after them, and they get a meal and win prizes! The prize for you is the big
grins across all the kids' faces.
The main
appeal of the summer camps are that you are able to give hands-on
attention to all the children in an informal setting.
The activities you can help
with offer lots of creativity and a whole heap of fun, both for you and
the children. At the same time, they learn more about things like dance
and
music ... and you!
If you've got nothing planned and you have a couple a
weeks or longer free this summer, why not come to India and have fun
with the kids!
Project Dates:
The summer camps run between different dates. The first one
begins on 4th April and the last camp finishes on 3rd June and you can
stay for 2 or 4 weeks
(or longer, if you combine it with a teaching or sports placement).
Please see the tables further down the page for precise dates for each
camp.

TEACHING & FUN IN SUMMER
SCHOOLS:
This is a special Summer project which the schools have arranged and they want
us to be a part of it! It gives the kids something to do during the holidays
that will be fun for them and will keep them entertained and perhaps teach them
some skills at the same time.
This is our
first year being involved with the Madurai Summer Camps and it is a very
exciting opportunity for us, the children and you! The main appeal of the summer
camps are that you are able to give hands-on attention to all the children in an
informal setting. We have run a very similar project at summer camp’s in Ghana
since 2005 and have received comments like, "the best time of my life", "I loved
every minute of it and I'm going to miss my children!" and the best one, "I'm
coming back for next year's camp".
The activities
on offer for the children are so wide-ranging and we are sure there is something
for everyone:
Many sports, including football, badminton, karate,
yoga, chess, gymnastics and there is even a cricket
coaching camp for those of you who share the nations love for the bat
and ball!
A great range of creative activities including dance, art,
design, drawing, puzzles, Indian folk music,
drums, Western dance, even skating!
More academic activities are also available
mental maths,
handwriting, spoken English, English grammar,
computers, current affairs and amazing facts.
We also have a ‘kiddies camp’ for those of you who love nurturing the
little ones! This is aimed at providing an all-round and total learning and
growing environment for them. You can help with story time, audio/
visual, music and dance.
The kids will
be learning to use English at the same time, so they'll not only have fun,
they'll also benefit from the activity. These activities also benefit the
children by improving their team-work skills, social interaction and building
their confidence.
The Summer Camp will take place in the grounds of several schools
where we normally send teaching volunteers to in term time. There are 7 schools
running the camps this year and their dates all differ slightly. There are
normally around 3 hours available each day at each summer camp. Have a good read
through the tables below for where and what you can do:

However, during the holiday period it is likely the school will
have only a few members of staff present as the rest of the staff are likely to
be away on holiday. For this reason you will have the opportunity to become
quite involved in the structure, running and development of the camp, which will
require you to work on your own initiative for a lot of the time. For this
reason, being creative is a must.
You may work
with large or small groups of children, so you need to be diverse and organised,
but you are encouraged to utilise any skills or passions you have, whether these
are playing sport, music, drama or just games.
Past volunteers made a real difference by introducing a fun and
creative way for the children to express themselves and learn about new things.
You’ll be rewarded by how much fun the children will have!
So if you haven't got anything planned and you're free for a couple a weeks or
longer from April onwards, why not come to India and have fun with the kids.
Our
India Manager and his team will look after you well. You'll get lots of advice
about the do's and don’ts of Indian culture, what to do and where to go.
ACCOMMODATION:
Your accommodation will either be in our main volunteer house in
Madurai, or at our volunteer flat over the road. You will eat your meals at the
main house with everyone else though. You may also have the option of living
with a host family nearby. This is a wonderful way to become immersed in the
local culture and community.
“Food is of a high standard with Travellers both in terms of quality and
preparation. Although it is predominantly vegetarian, every effort is made to
accommodate the tastes of non-vegetarians, with plenty of fresh fruits available
on a daily basis.
The accommodation is basic but comfortable with good washing facilities for each
bedroom. The lounge offers the comforts with a TV, DVD and stereo player for
entertainment enabling a sociable and friendly atmosphere”Sharon
Perry, Teaching Project March 2008
Food will be local cuisine - again this is to enable you to fully experience
living as local Indians do.
When we arrange your placement, we will liaise extensively with you regarding
both the placement and your accommodation. As always, our local Manager will
look after you well and will always be on hand to help and offer advice.
TRAVEL AND SUPPORT:
You have the option to arrange your own flights or we can assist you with your
flight arrangements. If you would like us to do this for you, we will liaise
with you regarding available flights and dates to suit you. All arrangements for
your flight bookings/payments will be fulfilled by Murray Rogers Travel Ltd.,
ATOL No. 6856.
(Read more about Murray Rogers Travel Ltd.) Where possible, we arrange for
two or more people to travel on the same flight and we will let you have the
names and telephone numbers of other volunteers on your flight, so that you can
chat to each other or even meet up before leaving for your placement.
Where possible, all flights we arrange for you have changeable
return tickets because many of our volunteers choose to extend their stay
once they are in their destination country. Changeable return tickets enable you
to do so, within the limits of your visa and the level of your air ticket, of
course. If you choose to book your own flights, you should endeavour to get a
changeable ticket.
We can also arrange your flight dates to give you
additional time at the end of your project for travelling around and sightseeing
- this is a fascinating and wondrous country!
VISAS: A visa is
required for India and we'll send you all the necessary forms and information to
make the process very easy for you.
You'll fly into Madurai (you may have 1 or 2 stopovers en route), where you'll
be met by our India Manager or one of his staff. From the airport you'll be
taken to your accommodation and introduced to your hosts and other volunteers
who are also staying there. You'd be well advised to prepare yourself for an
almost overwhelmingly friendly welcome! After an informative induction, you
will then be introduced to your work placement!
