CARE FOR ORPHANS
A rewarding and worthwhile
project in an Orphanage in South India. This project is extremely
beneficial for you and for the
children you work with.
Your work here will be to help the carers with
the day to day running of the centers, and caring for the children.
On
this page:
"This placement met my
expectations and more, and there was more than enough work; starting at
8am through to 4pm, and I wasn’t still!
I worked in general child care, bottle feeding, hygiene needs, bathing
(43 children daily), teaching staff, and playing with children”.

ABOUT THE PROJECT AND YOUR WORK
Our projects are situated in and around the small
town of Madurai. Your work here will be to help the carers with
the day to day running of the centers, and caring for the children. Most of your
work will be to help and assist the carers with their daily rounds, as well as
making medical notes and updating records. You will also be asked to help with
computer entries, and help clean equipment and various areas within the
hospital/Orphanage.
It is difficult to be specific about the
day-to-day work you will do because work is so varied and spread across many
areas. The hospital and orphanage are very busy with a multitude of duties and
responsibilities, so you will probably be worked very hard in most areas! You will get a good general feel of the orphanage
by working and/or observing in most departments. The type of work you will be
allocated will depend to an extent on your own abilities and capabilities, which
is understandable given that you will be dealing with patient health and safety.
Your hours may vary insofar as they will be
subject to shift rotas. Normally you will work from 9-5 Monday to Friday.
However, you may sometimes work evenings or nights, sometimes over weekends,
etc., but you will have time off on other days instead.
You will be given basic and general on the job
training by your supervisor, and further jobs should become available especially
for those with medical experience. You will be helping the staff look after the
infants and children at the hospital/orphanage, and you will generally assist
the staff with their day to day work, and help out with any medical support
which is needed. You will be supervised all of the time while you
are there, and you will be given help and directions, which includes on the job
training and advice.
Your work load and responsibilities will depend
on you yourself and your attitude to your work, More work, with more
responsibility, will become available as you grow in confidence and in skill,
and as the staff's confidence in you increases. The work will basically be within an orphanage
and may include all the daily activities for caring for the children. They need
lots of tender loving care and interaction with you. Generally, you work will
include some of all of the following:
-
Preparing food for the children.
-
Helping the children eat
-
Nursing and caring for the children
-
Occasionally taking the children to the hospital for
immunization, treatment etc
-
General cleaning of the compound and the school/Orphanage.
-
Washing clothes and the children
-
Teaching English, arithmetic and giving computer training
to the children, if you can
-
Career counselling and general counselling
-
Peer group counselling
-
Organizing and facilitating games and plays for the
children.
-
Educating the children about personal and environmental
hygiene
-
Helping the Home to develop and manage a kitchen garden
"I did a
placement at the Orphanage in July and August. It was a great experience, made
special mostly by the children at the orphanage who were just wonderful! I hope
these photos show you their beautiful little personalities that I got to enjoy
thanks to Travellers. This trip really changed my life. Thank you very much!"
Rosanne Sunden "It's so nice that I've had
the opportunity to really live in a place and feel that I know it and have a
base. I've grown quite attached! You know, like the little routines, the corner
shop where I buy my Sprite and fags, the Internet, the auto driver I get back
from the pool everyday and I don't even need to tell him where to go or ask the
price .... I think that is something very special and something I'm so pleased I
did during my gap-year. I can be a poor tourist backpacker whenever I want to,
but to live somewhere is quite different."
