PLACEMENT OVERVIEW:

You can work with a legal practice in Accra giving you the opportunity to get exposure to all aspects of legal practice and gain experience in the day-to-day running of a Ghanaian law practice. If you are going to specialise in a particular area of law, the law firm will be more than happy to take this into consideration during your placement.

Ghanaian law follows common law, which is based on the British system. During the placement, you will be given plenty of opportunity to visit the Ghanaian Courts and observe how they function. Cases could range from civil and criminal law to conveyancing, Probate and property law. If you're interested in Human Rights law, you should be exposed to quite a lot of it in this practice.

WHAT YOU'LL GAIN FROM DOING THIS PROJECT:

  • An exciting, never-to-be-forgotten adventure into Africa and Ghanaian culture.

  • New skills, more confidence, a greater understanding of a different culture, invaluable personal and professional development.

  • An entry on your CV or résumé that will put you head and shoulders above most others in the job market

  • And best of all ... an unforgettable experience!

As with all our Work Experience placements, this placement is tailored to suit your specific requirements to ensure you gain the maximum benefit and experience. We’ll have detailed discussions with you to ascertain what you’re looking for then we’ll try to tailor the programme for you.

"So far have been really impressed with everything, the people are really friendly and have been very well looked after by my host family and everybody else. I've probably been most impressed by the nature of the work I've been doing, feel like I'm getting much more responsibility than I would be able to get in England, and dealing with Human Rights work which is very interesting as well. I'm getting to prepare proper reports and proposals and not just doing menial tasks and the trip to Ada was great. Have also been on a trip to the opening of the Ghanaian Parliament and I didn't really expect any of this when I came!

Within the firm, the lawyers specialise in their own areas. Their area of expertise and areas in which you may get the chance to work in includes:

  • Corporate Practice: Structure and incorporation of companies, partnerships and joint ventures

  • Commercial: Negotiation and drafting of tender documents and management contracts, registration of copyright, patent and trade marks and dispute resolution for international trade finance, telecommunication, shipping timber, agriculture, manufacturing, hospitality industries and major infrastructure projects.

  • Industrial Relations: Industrial disputes resolution, drafting of service. Agreement negotiation of CBAs, employee share ownership programmes, welfare schemes and superannuation.

  • Banking and Financing: Negotiation and drafting of international and local loan agreements, debentures and securities. Acquisition of banking and financing licenses. Provision of legal financial service companies.

  • Environmental: Environmental consciousness in Ghana is growing rapidly. Regulatory practices in this area are increasingly vigorous but not yet very systematic. Our expertise in planning compliance is valuable to all investors

  • Human Rights

I get on really well with the other volunteers and we all meet up regularly so always have plenty to do. We went to Cape Coast and Kakum the other week, which was brilliant." Paul Jones

ACCOMMODATION AND LIVING IN GHANA

Your accommodation will vary, depending on your work location. For this project you are likely to be staying in a family run hostel. The hostel is a comfortable guest house accommodation, with 11 rooms, the owners are very friendly and they are Ghanaian so you can still experience the amazing culture.

Many of our volunteers remain friends with their host families long after they leave Ghana and in some cases they return to the country later especially to visit their family. Sometimes members of their Ghanaian family have even gone to visit them in their home country.

"My family - Lizzie and Prince are lovely. The children are very sweet, and I feel extremely lucky to have been placed with them. The house is of a Western standard in most ways, and Lizzie's cooking is excellent. I feel a part of their family already."

Food will be local cuisine - again this is to enable you to fully experience living as local Ghanaians do.

When we arrange your placement, we will liaise extensively with you regarding both the placement and your accommodation.  As always, our Local Manager will look after you well and will always be on hand to help and offer advice.

TRAVEL:

You have the option to arrange your own flights or we can assist you with your flight arrangements. If you would like us to do this for you, we will liaise with you regarding available flights and dates to suit you. All arrangements for your flight bookings/payments will be fulfilled by Murray Rogers Travel Limited, ATOL No. 6856. Where possible, we arrange for two or more people to travel on the same flight and we will let you have the names and telephone numbers of other volunteers on your flight, so that you can chat to each other or even meet up before leaving for your placement.

You'll fly into Accra where you'll be met by our Ghana Manager, or one of his staff. From the airport you'll be taken to your work and your accommodation and introduced to your hosts. You'd be well advised to prepare yourself for an almost overwhelmingly friendly welcome!

VISAS: Visas are required and must be purchased before departure. We'll liaise with you about your visa requirements, if any, and make the Visa process very easy.

Where possible, all flights we arrange for you have changeable return tickets because many of our volunteers choose to extend their stay once they are in their destination country. Changeable return tickets enable you to do so, within the limits of your visa and the level of your air ticket, of course. If you choose to book your own flights, you should endeavour to get a changeable ticket.

We can also arrange your flight dates to give you additional time at the end of your project for travelling around and sightseeing - this is a fascinating and wondrous country!
