PROJECT OVERVIEW
You'll teach disadvantaged children in a rural village school on the paradise island Koh Rong Samloem off the coast of Sihanoukville. There are approximately 80 children on the island who are in desperate need of education. They range from Kindergarten (4 years) through to teenagers aged 16. The school itself is very small with just two class rooms. The children who attend the school are very poor and many also do other jobs on the island at the same time, such as fishing and farming. Although some English is taught in the school, it often taught by local people (Khmers) who also have difficulty with the language. The teachers are in desperate need for any help they can get.

The schools are very different to schools in Western countries and the children have a hunger to learn, particularly from native speakers. When you're not teaching, you can walk or ride around the villages and interact with the local people. You can also play volleyball, pool, visit the jungle on the island or go swimming or diving - there is a lot to do.

Facilities in villages on the island are well below the basic standard. Cambodian children have a cultural and moral obligation to help and provide financial support to their parents once they grow up, so they are often forced to leave the villages in order to seek a better education and ultimately a way to financially support their parents. This often proves exceptionally challenging and, unfortunately, many of the children resort to easier, more drastic measures such as factory work, drug trafficking, theft, prostitution. The organisation we work with on this teaching project (MCC) hopes to provide the villages with alternative options by supplying the best possible education for the children so that the children will stay in the village and also help support the families. This is why your work here is so important to the village.

This project has two possible aspects, teaching and community involvement. You'll be encouraged to get involved with the beach clear up, which may also include snorkelling out in the waters to help collect rubbish. You're also likely to have a direct involvement with daily life in the village, a great opportunity to learn about the people and the community. To add to your enjoyment, you can also take optional lessons in the Khmer language. You'll probably be much in demand from the locals as well who will want to practice their English on you!

You may also get involved in other subjects, like Drama, Arts or Sport. Like most children, they also love sports. Just imagine ... you could be playing either beach volley ball or soccer by the crystal clear waters while at the same time helping the children to improve their English in an informal setting.

Many of the children at the school are not used to seeing Westerners, so you may find yourself being the centre of attention - they'll welcome you into their school and you'll soon find that Cambodia feels like a second home. All of the children and teachers are incredibly welcoming and friendly!

WHAT YOU'LL GAIN FROM DOING THIS PROJECT:

  • An exciting, never-to-be-forgotten adventure into beautiful Cambodia and it's fascinating South-East Asian culture.

  • The enormous satisfaction of helping disadvantaged children and knowing that you made a difference to them.

  • New skills, more confidence, a greater understanding of a different culture, invaluable personal and professional development.

  • An entry on your CV or résumé that will put you head and shoulders above most others in the job market

  • And best of all ... an unforgettable experience!

WORK CONTENT:

WORKING HOURS:
You'll normally work around 5 hours a day, 5 days a week. However, you can do less or more, should you wish. Initially, you may act as an assistant to the English teacher, helping take small groups and practice conversational English. Once your confidence grows, you may be put in charge of the class and asked to help within other areas, such as sport or drama, if you have an interest in these.

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS IN CAMBODIA:
School holidays can differ quite widely. Normally there are 5 term breaks in the year for schools throughout Cambodia. The term breaks vary from state to state, but generally they fall roughly during the later part of the months of January, March and October, with a three month break over July, August and September. However, because this is an independent school, classes tend to go on throughout the year, regardless of holidays, so you will be able to do your placement at any time through the year.

QUALIFICATIONS
Don't worry about not having special qualifications. The whole idea of Travellers is to provide any help possible, whether it is merely enabling children to hear English pronunciation from native English speakers, or providing additional help with other academic subjects or showing them how to use a computer - anything you can offer is very much appreciated and everyone knows you're not a qualified teacher. The emphasis is on much-needed language development, additional learning and cultural contact. It gives your pupils valuable experience.

We provide you with a Teaching Guide and suggestions on inexpensive resources to take with you. Children are always fascinated with volunteers and want to learn as much as possible about you. They love to hear stories about you, your family and where you are from so it is ideal to take pictures, maps, magazine articles and photos of your family and friends with you. You can also use these as excellent resources for a lesson to promote discussion and interest.

Although you don't need any qualifications to participate on a teaching project, a great way to become more confident in the classroom is to take part in a weekend TEFL course. Not only will this help you with how to go about lesson planning, it will also give you an introduction about teaching abroad as well as ways to get the children inspired and eager to learn! You'll be reminded of fantastic children’s games, tips on how to remember everyone’s names as well as an opportunity to look through all the latest teaching books. Even if you have had experience in a classroom before, it’s always reassuring to take part in one of our courses to help you prepare for teaching overseas.

ACCOMMODATION

You'll live on Koh Rong Samloem Island in bungalows where the volunteers sleep. These consist of 4 bedrooms (two bunk beds) and double-bed rooms for couples. The rooms all have electricity that is generator-powered for lights, mosquito nets, a private bathroom with a very basic Western toilet and bucket shower. There is a large communal area where the volunteers eat (fantastic food!). Meat and vegetarian dishes are available and there are hammocks where you can relax. You'll share a room with other volunteers.

The island has no firm roads as of yet and is simply sandy tracks. There are 2 bars on the island (one with a pool table) and plenty of shops where you can buy drinks, cigarettes, etc. The locals are super-friendly and very pleased and happy to have you there. This is, in fact, the only island that is fully and actively protected by the government.

FOOD:
Food is included on this project.

A little about Cambodian food: Cambodian food has generally been influenced by Chinese and French cuisine, and also shares many common dishes with Thai food, although not as spicy. The staple food for Cambodians is rice. Almost every meal includes a bowl of rice, although noodles are also popular. A wide range of curries, soups and stir fried are served with rice. Typically, Cambodians eat their meals with at least three or four separate dishes. A meal will usually include a soup, or samlor, served alongside the main courses. Each individual dish will be either sweet, sour, salty or bitter. Chilli is usually left up to the individual to add themselves.

Khmer cuisine also uses many vegetables, some of which are very unusual, such as different and unusual local varieties of melon, beans and squash. Fish is the most common form of meat in Khmer cuisine, including dried salted fish known as trei ngeat. Getting to taste and know local cooking is one of the many delights of living in a foreign country.

TRAVEL, VISAS, plus SUPPORT & BACKUP:

ON ARRIVAL:
When you arrive you may spend a day or two on the mainland in Sihanoukville where you be given an induction by Tim, our Manager in Cambodia. Tim will spend time with you to familiarise you about the country and its culture, as well as giving you useful information like how to use the phones, transport system, etc.

You'll usually fly into Phnom Penh Airport and transfer to Sihanoukville by bus. Once in Sihanoukville, you be transferred to the Island by boat. The boat is lovely. It has two decks and an inside waterproof cabin and has recently been refurbished. The boat goes to and from the island at least once every 3 days, but mostly it is more frequent than this. In case of an emergency, there are longtail boats always available for immediate transport to the mainland. The trip on the normal boat takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. You'll be taken to your accommodation and introduced to the other volunteers before starting your placement.

You have the option to arrange your own flights or we can assist you with your flight arrangements. If you would like us to do this for you, we will liaise with you regarding available flights and dates to suit you. All arrangements for your flight bookings/payments will be fulfilled by Murray Rogers Travel Limited, ATOL No. 6856. Where possible, we arrange for two or more people to travel on the same flight and we will let you have the names and telephone numbers of other volunteers on your flight, so that you can chat to each other or even meet up before leaving for your placement.

Where possible, all flights we arrange for you have changeable return tickets because many of our volunteers choose to extend their stay once they are in their destination country. Changeable return tickets enable you to do so, within the limits of your visa and the level of your air ticket, of course. If you choose to book your own flights, you should endeavour to get a changeable ticket.

VISAS:. We'll send you all the necessary forms and information and make the process very easy for you.

We can also arrange your flight dates to give you additional time at the end of your project for travelling around and sightseeing - this is a fascinating and wondrous country!
