A professional
internship at a media solutions company in central Shanghai. Gain
valuable experience while having a great time living and working in the
emerging business capital of the East...
In a world of competition
where an army of graduates are lining up for the top jobs, this project
will set you apart from the crowd and make employers look twice...
You’ll be working at a media
solutions provider which was founded in Shanghai in 1996. The company has
three divisions: Publication Services, Translation Services
and Design Services. Daily work at the office comprises quite a range
of things, including producing economic and luxury magazines, review
listings and statistics books and websites. Your work may involve processing
information at a computer, looking around the internet for statistics,
writing web blogs, writing articles, editing data, data or sales calls,
proof reading texts.
Clients the company have
worked with include Financial Times, Coca-Cola, Ericsson, Haagen-Dazs,
the European Chambers of Commerce, the China Economic Review, Yamaha,
AsiaExpress and the Economist.

Intensive Mandarin Course. To find out more about the Mandarin Course, please

You'll need be very flexible
on this project, as the this an ‘internship’ with the company rather than a
project in a certain area or department. You must be willing and able to put
your mind to any task that is assigned to you in any department. As time
goes on, your supervisor will assign tasks based on your
skills and expertise as these skills become apparent. You will most likely
start off by doing some very basic things – helping whoever needs help, and
probably even making the odd cup of tea! However, if things progress well
and you work hard, there are opportunities for many different kinds of work
and any relevant skills you have will be put to use.
There are
approximately 60 staff at the company, who work from 9am until 6pm Monday to
Friday with one hour for lunch, but your working hours may be slightly
different, depending on the volume of work the company has at any time. Your
weekends will usually be free for relaxing and sightseeing with the other
volunteers! However, if there is an approaching deadline, you must be
flexible and prepared to work odd hours and some weekends – as with any job
in the media industry! Staff at the company are predominantly Chinese people
with varying standards of English, yet some other nationalities also work at
the company, and the MD is British.
This is a
really excellent opportunity to get to grips with the real world of media in
Shanghai, learn lots and really contribute to the company. It's a very
serious work experience placement, so you will be expected to attend work
without fail and work hard. However, if you put lots in you will almost
certainly get lots back - not only knowledge and a great experience, but a
really impressive addition to your CV. There really is no better way to
launch yourself into the media or business world than by gaining experience
in Shanghai - the city on everyone's lips in the world of business.
Your
Qualifications: The most important
qualifications for this placement are that you’re self motivated, confident
working both alone and in a team and have a friendly disposition. If you
have a background in economics/sociology/maths or science, this is helpful,
as you may be working on processing statistics data. If you have a
background in media or languages, this is also helpful for obvious reasons.
However, no formal qualifications or experience
are required for this project. You may find that your
assigned tasks differ depending on your skills and experience, so if you’re
not confident in every area don’t worry.
The things you must be confident of doing
are:
Beneficial, but
not required skills:
Writing and speaking English
Speaking on the
telephone
Working
with computers
Handling
statistics
Higher
level writing skills
Holidays are as follows:
May Holiday Week : 1-7th
May
October Holiday Week : 1-7th
October
New Year: The date for Chinese
New Year changes every year, and there will usually be a 2 week holiday
around this time.
You are welcome to take part in
a project over these periods and spend the holiday travelling or
relaxing in Shanghai.
WHAT IS REQUIRED OF YOU:
China is still a developing country in a period of transition. The
living standard falls short of what we are used to in
the West. The Chinese culture and heritage is totally
different to Anglo-Saxon or Western cultures and this must be borne in
mind. However, the people are very friendly and
will help you all they can, and, of course, our China
Organiser will look after you during your placement. Self-reliance and independence are highly
appreciated and required in China and will help you to make the most of this
wonderful opportunity!
China is a non-English speaking environment and
we strongly advise that you try to learn a few basic Chinese words before
starting your programme. This will help you to get involved in the daily
life of the local people.
On this project you'll live at a Travellers Flat in Shanghai while on
your placement. The flat is typical Shanghai style and all the Work
Experience Volunteers live here together. The flat accommodates 5 people
maximum.
The flat has two bedrooms, one of
which is also often used as a lounge room, depending on how many
volunteers are living in it at the time you're there.
Owing to the vast population and shortage of space
in towns and cities, it is common practice in China that flats and
houses have no one room dedicated to be used as a lounge, so one of the
bedrooms is frequently used as a place to gather.
The Travellers flat also has a kitchen with washing
facilities and a bathroom.
You will eat lunch and dinner at the
hotel, and be provided with a meal budget for breakfast. You can buy
breakfast from one of the many delicious restaurants around the flat, or
prepare it yourself in the flat's kitchen!
