ABOUT TEACHING ART, DRAMA, MUSIC OR DANCEChildren from all backgrounds can participate in drama, developing essential skills by learning to express themselves and gain self-confidence. You'll teach in classes and sometimes informally outside the classroom. During your project, you may be able to produce a play or a musical and invite the parents to come and watch. During your project, depending on the country you choose, you'll either live in a house with other Travellers volunteers, with a host family, or in a comfortable backpackers where you'll be able to socialise with other Travellers and visitors to the region.
OPTIONAL TEACHING DAY If you have no experience and you're nervous at the idea of teaching, don't worry, you're not alone. You can enrol in an optional 1-day intensive open teacher training course which will provide you with advice and mechanisms to give you more confidence. Although the day centres on formal teaching of academic subjects in a classroom, you may find it beneficial in that you'll pick up lots of tips and advice on teaching children in general. We also provide you with a Teaching Suggestions Guide which we've put together for our volunteers. It is packed with guidelines to help you plan lessons and has many examples and ideas for topics and games to use in class to help the children gain confidence in using English, but can be adapted to help you in planning your drama, music or dance classes. "I've just had the most incredible day. The warmth I was given by the children and staff was quite something. Don't think the kids had seen anything like me before. They either pointed and smiled or just came up and hugged me. A number of them asked me if I was a pop star!" Adrian Tate, teaching in South Africa |
